Sufficient salary ranges in and around Munich

@Indians: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Germany&country2=India&city1=Munich&city2=Mumbai

@gazzyorock: In Munich graduated programmers start from 1500 - 2000 eur NET per month. After few years of valuable experience it can rise to 3000 net. It's harder to get more, especially if the company will have to apply for visa for you. You will be paying lower taxes if you will come here with unemployed wife (around 500 eur less taxes monthly). You will have to calculate min 1000 - 1500 for living, so to achieve level of your savings you would have to be above average.

@llopez09:

- Electricity (having washer and dryer, A/C)

from 25eur per month for studio

- Internet

25 eur monthly costs 2 years plan

- Cable/Satellite TV

use internet tv

- Transportation costs

70 eur for the whole city, less if you will live very centrally

- Buy a VW Golf (on installments) or lease it.

checked linked numbeo.com link on top of my post

- Groceries

depends weather you cook at home or not but count 250eur - 500 eur monthly

- Gasoline

I don't drive. I guess 1,6eur per liter: http://www.benzinpreis-aktuell.de/

- Any other expenditure that you might be aware of, e.g. in some countries you have to pay for trash pick-up.

it's included in costs of apartment

- Health insurance for two people.

that's percentage of your salary, it's obligatory, not working spouse of working one is insured for free

- Basic cell phone plans (the very minimum here)

very minimum is Lidl 5eur monthly: 100min or sms for free per month + 100MB internet. for 8eur monthly there is 300MB + 300SMS + 300MIN for free. 10EUR costs starter.

@itsnikee: the way you constructed your question targets it to Indians only. So I cannot answer you properly, as I don't know Indian currency exchange rates, but I suggests you to look at the link on top of my post. Your salary makes 4100 or 4800 EUR net (depends weather your wife will work or not) monthly. It's double average for Munich, so you can expect to live comfortable, but not rich. If your wife could get a job that would increase your saving potential more.

@ Lotzo Icon: I don't think you can work in toruism industry without knowledge of German.

Hello Friends ...

I am making decision of relocating to Germany and have questions related to how much salary would be enough to lead a comfortable life.I tried browsing various threads in TT, but couldn't find one specific to me question..

I am getting a salary offer of 100 K Euro / annum +20K Bonus and might move to Munich by October this year. Now my question is :

1. Is the salary sufficient for a family of 3 - Self+Wife+ Son (who is currently studying in 12th Standard) in India and join next year for UnderGrad studies in Germany

2. Considering the taxation and social contribution, I assume I will end up getting only around 5.6 K Euros/ month.

3. How much savings is possible per month? I target 2500 to 3000 Euros/ Month

4. With comfortable life I mean the following :

4a) Staying in 3 Bedroom house fully furnished ( TV, Washing machine, dishwasher etc etc) with one car parking, garden

4b) Owning a decent car (BMW, Audi or like)

4c) Taking Ski-vacations or sea-diving vacations once/twice a year to various locations in Europe

4d) Engineering education for my son

4e) Internent, Telephone, DTH (with Indian channels) etc etc

Can anyone suggest if the above package would be sufficient? Looking for inputs from you all staying since long in Munich..

Thanks for your help..

Regards

Unless your kid already speaks German, he won't be able to start studying here anytime soon. Applicants with a Higher Secondary School Diploma from India are not eligible for direct entry into a German university, they are required to either successfully complete 1 year of university in India or to attend a 1 year Studienkolleg (usually only available in German) first (or pass the Advanced JEE for the IITs, but I'm told if you manage this there is no point in coming to Germany).

Furthermore, although the salary you were offered is more than enough for you to afford the lifestyle to which you aspire, I doubt you'll be able to save 3k/month.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly do you do?

Hi YorkshireLad, Mr.Adambee and Engelchen for your replies..

@Mr.Adambee : A BMW leased car from Sixt is available for 300 Euro/ month... so wouldn't it be possible? I was considering following calc :

House : 1000 (inclusive of all)

Car : 300

Living : 1500 (should take care of fuel+mobile+internet+food+club/restaurants once a week+gym)-> from what I read in earlier posts

Vacations : from the bonus that I get

So out of 5600 I would be spending 3000 monthly - saving of 2500 possible??!! right or wrong??

@ Engelchen : Thanks for important inputs. You are right, if he clears IIT -JEE no need to study in Germany. But we want him to study at TUM or some other equivalent university in Germany..problem is good course in Biotech engineering (his area of interest) are available only at Aachen and Jacobs..So I will need to investigate a lot to find the right college and course and admission process.. I didn't find university website too helpful in this matter. For eg. the Studienkolleg part you mentioned is news to me. Any further inputs in this direction would be helpful...

I work in IT field - kind of senior management position.

For a fully furnished house in Munich I reckon you're looking at €2500 to €3000 per month (at least).

Unless you live waaaay out in the sticks.

Yes. Enough for a good life.

3. How much savings is possible per month? I target 2500 to 3000 Euros/ Month

I am in a very similar situation and yes, you can save up to 3000€. But only if you are renting an apartment. For a house, I would cut it down to 2200€ or less.

4. With comfortable life I mean the following :

4a) Staying in 3 Bedroom house fully furnished ( TV, Washing machine, dishwasher etc etc) with one car parking, garden

4b) Owning a decent car (BMW, Audi or like)

Forget the fully furniture. If you plan to stay for a couple of years it is much cheaper and easier to find an unfurnished flat and then buy the furniture. Just make sure the kitchen is equipped. Really, stay away from furnished apartments.

Cars are very cheap here, especially second hand cars with 1 or 2 years. I would recommend you go to a large BMW or Mercedes stand and check for cars with 1 or 2 years, with brand warranty. On Mercedes that is called JungeStern program.

Bottom line: it is a very, very good salary, even for Munich. You will have a very comfortable life.

Just buy a second hand BMW or Merc with less than 2 years.

Ok, there you got it all wrong! For 1000€ you cannot even find a decent 2 bedroom apartment! For a 3 bedroom house I would put over 2000€.

Living : 1500 (should take care of fuel+mobile+internet+food+club/restaurants once a week+gym)-> from what I read in earlier posts

Vacations : from the bonus that I get

That seems a bit high. How much for restaurants and clubs??

So out of 5600 I would be spending 3000 monthly - saving of 2500 possible??!! right or wrong??

Not with a 3 bedroom house. Don't discard apartments, there are very nice ground floor apartments on small condominiums.

Thanks MikeMelga : Very useful info. I will follow your advice wrt apartments/condos. Clubbing once or twice a month and Restaurants twice a month....not much actually!! Basically weekly once going and chilling out...

I would appreciate if you can share some links to find such condos... a little far is ok..I heard new condo schemes are coming up on outskirts of Munich - and good to stay. Mr.Lodge and the likes are focused on Munich City and the inventory seems to be costly. I want to avoid hiring a real estate agent anyway.. would like to contact the owners directly.

Regarding cars, your suggestion is good.. I hope Jungestern scheme is available with lease/financing.. Can't pay upfront in a cash deal.

Given you position and salary are your new company not funding relocation assistance? There are a number of companies who will help you find a new home, assist with paperwork and the aithoreities, import of belongings and settling into your new home. They can also assist you in establishing realistic budgets for your needs. Bear in mind too the costs of finding a home - 3 months rent is typical, so you need to take this account in the one-time costs to move here.

Tip of the day- If the OP has an Indian driving license, it's not valid here and he has to do re-exams for theory and practice.

RWTH Aachen is excellent. Forget Jacobs. If you want to give your kid an American education send him to America.

For eg. the Studienkolleg part you mentioned is news to me. Any further inputs in this direction would be helpful...

You might want to start here: www.studienkollegs.de ;)

I have to agree with YL6, if the company is not willing to offer relocation assistance, you should seriously re-consider the offer. Keep in mind that it is not that unusual for companies to fire hire employees during the probabtionary period (6 months) while they can still do so relatively easily. Unfortunately, every now and then we have TTers who move here for a job and are terminated (for no apparent fault of their own) before their probationary period is over. Management postions tend to also have special clauses. You should also have your employment contract reviewed by someone at your own expense (your relocation consultant will have difficulty being objective).

Where is your company located? Can you at least give a hint of the area, if you don't want to name the company?

I'm asking this because some parts of Munich, while being very close to each others, are actually hard to commute. Example: you live in Solln (south) but you work on the east side of the city, across the river.

Amen, neighbor. Solln is a nightmare to get out of if you work pretty much anywhere not on the U3 / S7 / BOB. But it's a beautiful area nonetheless.
