Speed cameras in the UK

Has anyone driven a German (or other EU) registered vehicle besides a UK one in the UK and been flashed by a fixed position (unmanned) speed camera? If so did you get away with it?No letter in the post and No Fine and No summons or points on your license??I am planning a trip to the UK and just wondered how careful I needed to be these days with regards to observing the speed limits, particularly when there are signs indicating the dreaded speed cameras.I want to know if I can have a bit of fun.See how many times I can get flashed whilst over there knowing I am safe....Before Miss, Mrs or Mr Righteous starts on about the rights and wrongs of such actions I know what is right and wrong and it is my decision and choice what I do not theirs. I am also a sensible driver but if feel the urge to stick two fingers up at what I feel to be a system of outright money generating against the poor down trodden motorist then so be it.I understand there are plans a foot to stop what I intend but it has not happened yet as far as I know (unless you know differently)??http://www.connexionfrance.com/europe-cross-border-driving-fines-motoring-offences-speeding-france-uk-12870-view-article.htmlSo any info would be useful

Just so you know...you dumb fuck your ip address has been noted and identified...now if you ever have a road accident...your statements here will be enough to bury you even if its the other party's fault!! There is an organisation specially formed for keeping an eye on jokers like you and rest assured all your bull shit here has been duly forwarded to them...All your comments are now evidence against you!! I would be extra careful on the road now...forget speeding you will probably go under the minimum speed now if you want to continue driving!!! A friend of mine lost his dad to an asshole like you who was speeding just for fun...the fun was definitely over for the whole family who lost their bread winner and now have been forced to move into a council flat cause their house was repossessed!!

What a lot of vitriol on this thread! Question could have been answered without that. And if I ever think of posting something nasty, I remind myself that people that live in glass-houses etc. We are all guilty of something at some point in our lives.

Yes we are.

However if you post something nasty it is usually aimed at someone or something is it not?

It doesn't usually you saying that you're going to treat the roads as youre playground and fuck what anyone else thinks of them.

Anyway back to the OP.

Got blitzed speeding when on holiday in England in 2004,got the ticket in 2005 so yes they will find you.Mine was from a camera on the motorway which was operated by the police not the city, not sure if this makes any difference.

8mph over the 70 mph limit cost me 40 odd quid.

I had insomnia the other evening and watched one of those police chase reality TV shows that seems to be an ITV4 staple, and the plod had stopped a chap with a rear GB yellow registration plate clearly custom-made with German-style numbers, and told him that the reason they were illegal was that the character-recognition on UK cameras (speed, congestion zone, etc.) were not set up to identify their unique font. They confiscated the registration plates. I wondered whether that meant that a German-registered car would not be recognized, but reading the fore-going they were probably just using that as an excuse to get the wanker off the road.

Speaking of excuses, I fully agree with the negative posts. "Having a bit of fun" via speeding is irresponsible at best and deadly at worst. I am sure dropping things off of high-rise buildings might well be "a bit of fun" as well, until someone gets killed. Shame on you!

So much animosity, not to mention ignorance.

The OP asked a question, yet as usual the blue rinse brigade get out in force and adopt the moral highground.

In stark contrast to what many here believe, speed cameras do NOT reduce accidents, nor do they increase safety. they are, as the OP rightly pointed out, nothing more than a "nice little earner" for the councils. Parking fines fall into exactly the same boat. Let's get a few things straight here...

The OP will not be persecuted by the German authorities for illegal activities in other EU states, unless he is being sought for a serious offence (Rape, murder, etc). The German police have enough to do with their own investigations, without assisting UK councils to make a bob or two. unless a European Arrest Warrant of arrest has been issued the German police will more than likely tell the UK SCAMera Partnership to ram it!

His licence will not be endorsed with points as The UK Magistrates courts (Even if it got that far...which it wouldn't) has NO jurisdiction in Germany. A Magistrate or judge may impose a ban, however this will be only applicable within the country of Jurisdiction. Been there, got the t-shirt! I had a german copper stop me in Hamburg for a check, when he asked for my licence I told him it was currently in Swansea (5 year ban), he assumed, incorrectly that I was also Banned in Germany, and took me to court. The Stadtsanwatschaft also believed this to be the case, however the Judge threw the case out as technically my "right" to drive in Germany had never been revoked.

The OP will more than likely get a few calls/letters from "authoritive bodies" in the UK. These will be nothing more than Debt Collection Agencies hoping to frighten the OP in to parting with his cash. They will get his details from Flensburg, but if he doesn't interact with them there is sod all they can do.

What he is proposing is ludicrous and he has a blatant disregard for others' safety. However, from a legal standpoint he would get off scott free providing he didn't cause loss or harm to any individual.

Some on here really should read up on the massive divide between something that is ILLEGAL and something that is UNLAWFUL.

Legislation is a rule of society given the force of law by the consent of the governed. When exactly did the OP consent to being part of the Legislative society that is the UK? Cause harm or loss however and it becomes a LAW matter.

The OP asked a question

While implying he was about to go out and intentionally break the law. Fairly premeditated.

Ummm...yeh they do? They are proven to reduce accidents in a number of 'hotspots'.

Why did you just completely make up everything you said?

Since making my original post for which I have no regrets or remorse.

I have been very surprised by the reactions of those who have deemed fit to reply to my 'innocent' enquiry.

Maybe in hindsight I should have omitted any reasons or intentions as to why I made the enquiry.

It is interesting the absolute waffle and drivel which can so easily pour from certain righteous? Individuals. Personally I do not believe they have any right to prejudge me or anyone else and I wonder how guiltless they are particularly when it relates to ‘always’ driving within the speed limits.

Checking back on my original posting I can now be certain that I stated very little in the way of my intentions and what I did write could easily be taken with a pinch of salt :

“I want to know if I can have a bit of fun.

See how many times I can get flashed whilst over there knowing I am safe....”

From this brief ‘whimsy’ so much was read into this and expounded upon. Anyone would think that I was planning some major motoring atrocity and that I am to blame for all the accidents involving motoring lunatics who have caused death and destruction upon the roads.

What a load of pious, smarmy, small minded little weasely shits you are!

Maybe(?) you have had loved ones killed and/or injured on the roads but venting your anger and sorrow on me is not going to change a damn thing. If know you feel strongly about these episodes in your lives. You should try to come to terms with them and realise that time it a great healer. One day you will understand why they happened but don’t look for blame where it cannot be apportioned or warranted.

For the information of any who are still reading. Whilst in the UK I became a member of and passed the IAM test. (look it up). I have also been driving for over 35 years without a single accident and have a ‘clean’ driving license.

I am a careful and considerate driver and have been complimented on my skilled and conscientious driving abilities on numerous occasions. What I say and what I actually do or two entirely different things to wit my posting was a bit of idle musing.

I will reiterate that as far as I am concerned Speed Cameras on the whole have been shown NOT to improve driving standards and in fact have contributed to accidents AND are known to be massive money generators for those who operate them.

I had to laugh when I read the post regarding my ‘premeditation’ and the fact that my isp can now be traced and used in evidence against me. What utter absolute rot hahaha. Get a grip you !”$!$£%$$^

So maybe after my trip I will post an update and keep you posted whether or not I get contacted by anyone of the number of nefarious organisations trying to track me down for my major crimes I committed on the roads of dear old England.

It is also important to remember that a driving licence affords a person the 'privilege' to drive, and not the 'right'.

By taking a vehicle onto the road, the driver accepts that he/she is bound by the rules of the road, legally and morally!

If you are driving at 28kmp in a 30 Zone in Germany and somone jumps under your car and gets killed, under the German system, you have to take some of the blame since you were driving the car.

If you drive with the intention of breaking the law/speed limits whatever, it goes without saying that you should lose this 'privilege'.

Really? Which LAW would that be? I think you mean legislation, look it up. UK LEGISLATION does not and cannot be enforced in Germany. LAW on the other hand can.

Ummm...yeh they do? They are proven to reduce accidents in a number of 'hotspots'.

Bollox, they are a cash cow for skint councils and drivers are an easy target. I'd even suggest that they make the "Hotspots" more dangerous by drivers worried more about their wallets and slamming the anchors on at the first whiff of a camera with blatant disregard for the driver behind them, even when they are well within the speed limit. Show me some stats on just one camera that has reduced the number of fatalities.

here, let me help you out... http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=speed+camera+less+accidents

Why did you just completely make up everything you said?

I didn't, do your own research, you might manage to educate yourself a little better. Lawful/Legal would be a good starting point.

I understand that you hate speed cameras, and from the way they sometimes seem placed for maximum profit I can see where that comes from.

On the other hand, the speed limits you would be breaking out of spite do reduce road deaths. A government report this year says: "The risk of fatality resulting from a road accident is greater on roads with higher speed limits."

Perhaps this is one reason (among many) why Britain had the lowest road death rate in Europe in 2009? (36 road deaths per million of the population - Germany: 51.)

Incidentally, as you have a wife and daughter to look out for, I'm sure you will also be interested to know that the report suggests the safest time and place to have your fun is on quiet country roads before 6 pm. (Though of course the lower rate of fatal accidents in that context might actually be because people don't usually tend to speed that much there.)

This thread makes me glad I use the U-Bahn. ....Although, there is the pedestrian risk. Crap. <_<

And to the OP, the fact that you haven't had an accident in 35 years may not be as comforting to people as you'd like to think. Most people don't go around maiming or killing others with their cars every few years. But it does seem to suggest you are not as reckless as your initial post suggested. Or maybe you (and the people around you) have just been really lucky.

Yes, and that also applies to the people out there who do the opposite of good driving by 1) driving in the left lane at 100kph when there is no speed limit 2) changing lanes without a directional 3) standing on the brakes, off the brakes, on the brakes 4) tailgating 5) applying lipstick, mascara 6)talking on the phone or 7) smoking while driving. In effect, doing everything BUT driving a car.

So, the people out here who are spitting out their "pious, smary, small-minded" insults at Gregca, should ask themselves how exactly they themselves drive. I promise you, the people who are doing 200kph on the autobahn with a high performance BMW (or similar) are less likely to cause a fatal accident than those of you who switch lanes without signaling.

People in glass houses... just saying.

It seems to me that everyone is missing the point - that this is a complete wind up by Gregca. No one is stupid or naieve enough to really want to behave like that.

Do you really think so? I'm not so sure. It's a common question to ask "I was caught doing "x" in "y" - can they catch/prosecute/jail me in "z"?"

Gregcas only somewhat foolish misdemeanour was to write "I want to know if I can have a bit of fun."...

1) Personally I have little time for the people who would understand the exact differences between law and legislation anyway. So no, I won't.

2) Regional news less than a year ago in my part of the UK said that my area no longer had the income to justify operating fixed speed cameras. Obviously not much of a money maker there then, eh?

gregca said: One day you will understand why they happened but don’t look for blame where it cannot be apportioned or warranted."

One day? I understand perfectly, it's when hormonal juvenile 'tards like the OP decide they want to try and get away with acting wrecklessly. I think I understood this when I was 10 or 11 years old, and I wasn't even a particularly fast learner.

I'm thinking of going out and drinking a bottle of vodka. Unfortunately I require to get my car from A to B shortly after. Anyone got any techniques for avoiding the cops? Window down, smoke a few cigarettes, use back streets? It's ok right?
