Samsung wants to update me

26 posts in this topic

Hello all you lovely computer nerds,

I know it's a bit weak as its own topic, but seeing as TT is home to the largest batch of IT nerds I'm familiar with, I thought I'd ask you all for help. My computer keeps wanting me to install "Samsung Update Plus". The agreement thingy says it will only use the information about my actual computer, in order to update pre-installed Samsung software. But what does this mean? Does it mean it will pester me every five minutes to re-boot my computer so it can make sure I have the latest memory-eating versions of programs I never use? I am a complete moran when it comes to computers so I don't know if this will hinder more than help. I despised the updates on my iPod and suspected they just served to make the thing obsolete; eventually I quit using iTunes because it made me want to bash my head in. Thoughts?

I think you nailed it on the head with this phrase:

...so it can make sure I have the latest memory-eating versions of programs I never use

It'll download driver and OS patches for you if you are too lazy to do it yourself, but yeah it probably also keeps all the bloatware they installed originally on it up to date too...

gahhhhhhh what are download driver and OS patches? Will my computer spontaneously combust without them? God I am an idiot.

Windows update should keep the security patches on your computer so I would just say screw it, as long as your not a gamer drivers are rarely an issue.

Quite easy dd. You have drivers that help your sound card and video card (device), for example, run correctly and efficiently. Drivers are merely software. Let's say you have a Creative brand sound card in your computer and you're using Windows Vista (this is merely an example!). A certain driver is installed so that your sound card functions properly with Vista. You then upgrade to Windows 7. Well, you'd need an updated version of the driver for your sound card so that it can now function with the new version of Windows. Also if there is an update to Windows (as there always is) then your sound card would most likely require an updated driver. They also do this when there is a glitch or bug between the hardware and the operating system.

We install so many various programs on our computers, it's hard for the the operating system to know and understand all of them. Sometimes a new program is released that loads of people use (Photoshop as an example) and it doesn't mesh well with the OS. So, the OS manufacturer will release and update so that it can fix the bug between the new program and the OS.

I hope that made a bit of sense. I would offer some websites that could offer a different explanation but more often then not, they get quite technical.

I do recommend installing the update. If not, you could experience programs not functioning correctly.

HondoMan, thanks for that. Also thanks for writing it in basic English as you're right, the tech speak on computer sites makes my tiny brain hurt which is why I came here for advice. TBH I don't use many programs at all on my computer--just writing programs, email, picture and fax viewer, media player. That's about it. But I will keep what you said in mind in case some stuff starts going haywire. Samsung offers to update me every time I turn on the fecking computer so I'm sure I'll have no shortage of chances to change my mind later.

Generally, something that's not been updated leaves the door open for more potential security issues, although this is more to do with leaving Windows (i.e., the operating system) not updated rather than these manufacturer software/hardware updates. I would only really recommend a non-geek to only run those updates if you're having a problem with something on your laptop, as it might help out. In a perfect world that shit would happen in the background and you wouldn't really know it's going on.

Oh and if you haven't done so ever/recently.. backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, BACKUP!

well I usually install the Windows updates although most of them seem to do with Explorer which I don't use because I'm not completely without brain cells. Will definitely do some backing up though. Thanks!

Its just called Internet Explorer. Explorer is what gives you things like your desktop and taskbar. I was being nerdy though, and its nothing you need to worry about.

No, you are not using Internet Explorer if you have instead chosen firefox or chrome.

And, you probably should not use explorer if it can be avoided.

See this article for why that's the case. Notice the only two browsers with significant security issues are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Apple Safari.
