Where I come from the, once friendly, local shops all now have metal roller shutters on their frontages...

After reading so many of your horror stories on where many of you come from, I´m relieved I don´t come from anywhere anymore. So many rough places not to come from...Jeez.

Where I come from you don't have to live in innerstadt to buy bread and milk when you have run out (or even a petrol station),

Where I come from meat is really meat,

Where I come from people don't assume you speak their mother tongue because of cultural diversity,

Where I come from beer is cheaper than tap water,

But then again where I come from does not really have public transport, if you don't have a car you are screwed...

Where I come from..

... you can watch a foreign language film in it's original language

... you can do things at lunchtime without fear of everything being closed...because it's lunchtime

... people stand up and give their train seats to the elderly, infirm or pregnant

... people don't smoke anymore

... spontaneous catch ups with friends are possible and don't require half a year's pre-planning

but

...you're not allowed to bring your best furry friend into a restaurant or cafe with you

.. girls don't sunbathe topless at the local swimming pool

Where I come from

- there is apparently no decent food in any restaurant in the vicinity

- no person over 30 goes out in the evenings because they're scared (and anyway there's nowhere decent to go for a meal)

- a simple cotton shirt is regarded as 'very posh'

- you can't dress the way you would like to for fear of being harassed

Very sad... but this is what I hear from the locals back home.

Where I come from

I am sad that has changed there so much since I was a child- in a very negative way.

nina's post about no one going out over thirty made me think. Where I come from, no one goes to a bar or a club or a concert if they are three years out of college. It just ends at 24 or 26--However long you can still feel okay around really young people. You can go to oldie concerts--concerts from someone who played when you were 20ish, but no new bands. You go to restaurants and you go to art openings where there is a band, and that is it.

Art openings? In North Wales?

Lakey's article is interesting. It mentions Llandudno - which is the town that I had in mind when writing my post. I've been told these things by guys - one of whom was a tall, hefty bloke over 35 who was too scared to go out in Llandudno for fear of being involved in violence.

What I like here is that when you go out - say to a pub or restaurant - there's a mix of age groups.

Where I come from men have 48 cm necks and we don't measure them in centimeters, we measure them in inches and if you're smaller than that you're called "the little guy". Oh, yeah, and where I come from kids are raised waking at 5:00 am feeding the animals and cleaning the barn in tons of snow...and I mean tons. After that, they can stand at the bottom of the driveway and wait for the bus in -20 weather. Then, they go to school and stay all day and have to stay awake and alert, otherwise they'll get hit on the playground with that ice ball. All of this is considered normal and anyone who whines about it is a hothouse flower. Lastly, where I come from your neighbors don't try to tell you what to do, but they do tell you when your kid's been bad...and you do something about it.
