Well, where I come from...

So often on the forum, we're not allowed to make comparisons to Germany vs. wherever we came from, for fear of hearing someone tell us that "Germany is not ________ (fill in your home country)" and to "have a nice trip home".

 

So here is your platform to say whatever it is that comes to mind, that makes you scratch your head and go, "huh?" It's not about Germany bashing or criticizing. Just noticing.

 

Today I was sat outside my local half-bake bakery, sipping some coffee and waiting for a friend, next to a pair of old men. Like old men are wont to do, they commented upon everything and said something to everyone who walked by. The elder of the old fellas kept offering wrapped chocolates to little kids. And the moms kept stopping to let the kids take it. In one instance, the kid didn't even want it, so the mom stopped, took the candy from the old man, thanked him, attempted to force the child to thank him, then put the child in the seat of the stroller alongside which it had been walking, then handed the child the candy.

 

"Well, where I come from," you teach a kid from an early age never to accept candy from strangers, especially not un-hermetically sealed candy, unless it happens to be Halloween, and your parents or some other chaperone are there anyway. I mean I know we all learned ages ago that no one would really waste their precious LSD getting some kids too young to appreciate it high, and it's probably not poisoned. But what about luring a kid away with a piece of candy?

 

"Where I come from" very few parents would stop and to let their kid take candy from a stranger. I guess we Americans are more uptight and paranoid than the chilled-out Germans in such matters.

 

What do they do here differently to where you come from, that never ceases to amaze you?

What you'd NEVER see in America, is people parking prams outside of stores with the babies still inside, while they go in and shop!!!

 

In fact, my aunt used to leave her baby at home alone during his nap time, to run to the store. I think parents in America would be arrested for that sort of thing.

.... pubs only serve food at meal-times.

 

I've obviously been spoilt here by beer gardens that serve food throughout the day. Spent a week or so walking around the Sussex Downs last year and we managed to miss the food-serving-window of opportunity on just about every day. H was particularly gleeful as not one of the pubs were in the least cheerful, helpful or apologetic about not being able to offer us anything.

Where I came from people stab people in the head with screwdrivers. They have no issues about kicking someone's front door in so ten or fifteen lads can run in and baseball bat someone whilst they are sleeping in bed (tho technically they usually deserve it).

 

Where I came from, during an average night out on a Friday, people glass people in the face or kick fuck out of someone where it is five to one odds.

 

Where I came from everyone my age snorts coke off the back of a toilet in some wanky pub whilst on a Friday till Monday morning bender (every weekend) because they have nothing else to look forwards to and shit jobs on shit pay don't really reward you. If they don't they are usually smack heads who are just counting down the moments until they die after taking some iffy H.

 

Where I came from people wont even say good morning to each other as they pass because you just don't know if that person is just going to flip and put you in the hospital or worse.

 

Where I came from is a fooking shit hole. I appreciate every second I spend in Munich. I have no intentions of ever going back to where I came from and if I'm lucky, my ashes will be thrown around the finest beer gardens this city has to offer

Where I come from, if someone decides they will tell you how you should be behaving (not taking out the trash after 8pm, not letting your dog pee on a certain piece of grass, not jaywalking, etc. etc.), that individual will be lucky to get away with a black eye and a couple of broken teeth. If choosing the wrong person to "educate," he/she could very well end up in the hospital with multiple stab wounds.

 

Don't get me wrong; I love that I can feel safe when I am walking home on deserted streets in the middle of the night after an evening out. But I also love the fear that crime instills in a person... If it means other people will leave me the feck alone.

 

So, where I come from, people mind their own fekking business, and I LOVE it.
