Moving to Bensheim in May

7 posts in this topic

Hi All,

I am currently living in Bremen but I have accepted a job in Benshem and will start May 1 and therefore will be moving there this month. I have some questions about the area.

-- Does anyone know of furnished apartments there? I will be working at Tyco Electronics which is very close the A5. Or could you provide any recommendations on nice places to live.

-- Is the public transportation pretty good to that industrial areas?

-- Do any of you live close to Bensheim? If so, maybe we could arrange to meet up.

-- My last question is a little more general. I am American and will therefore need a new work permit. I currently have a work permit to teach English. My question is do you know what documents I will need to go to the Auslaenderbehoerder? I have my contract, passport, insurance, resicendcy certificate, but I can't think of anything else. Also I have read that the Agentur fuer Arbeit can send German candidates to the company for 6 weeks and when the company denies all of the candidates then I will get the job. Do any of you know if this is still the case. Would it be possible to loose this offer to a German candidate?

Thanks for you help!!

Adam

Question 3: I live close to Bensheim :)

(I know my profile says "Darmstadt" - I work in Darmstadt, but live closer to Bensheim than DA.)

I can't really help you with the other questions, except that my gut feeling is that the public transportation isn't that great in Bensheim, but as I say it's a feeling based on various conversations with people and not really based on facts.

Edit: so; welcome to the area :D

Hi Adam

I have been living near Bensheim for 18 months...though I am leaving in early May to work in France for the Summer. As regards transport in Bensheim, I have found it to quite adequate and reliable. For info about the town bus (674)to your workplace, check out the Bensheim Town website:

http://www.bensheim.de/web/index.cfm/pm/info/idinfoseite/171

and this site has a timetable and map:

http://www.nvs-busreisen.de/download/Fahrplanbuch_NordBergstrasse.pdf

for general travel including trains:

http://www.rmv.de/

I think you will be fine at the Auslander büro with those documents. You will need an appointment before you go. The büro is in Heppenheim:

http://www.ortsdienst.de/Hessen/Bergstrasse/Heppenheim-Bergstrasse/Auslaenderbehoerde/Auslaender-Migrationsamt-des-Landkreises-Bergstrasse-inst303520/

The lady at the info desk (when I went) was very unhelpful and doesn't speak any foreign languages (perfect for that job!). If you have an appointment, go directly to the office indicated on your appointment and knock; they do not come out to get you.

There is a group who meet up once a month in Bensheim to speak English, but I can't remember the name. I myself go to http://www.english-club-darmstadt.de/ , they have their own bar and meet every Wednesday. It's a nice relaxing place to go, speak English and have a drink. There is an English Club event near Bensheim on 30th April if you are around; I will still be here so let me know if you want to come, you will be welcome.

Nice places to live, many in this area. Bensheim town centre is very nice and has lots of restaurants and bars. Towards the Odenwald just about everywhere is nice, as is Heppenheim, and the suburb of Bensheim-Auerbach has lots of fine houses. There are a lot of new builds in Bensheim towards the railway line and A5, so no shortage of apartments close to your work. The train line is quite noisy though! Check out Immoscout24. and this local one http://www.morgenweb.de/anzeigen/immobilien/kriterien_immobilienangebote.html

Good luck with your move, it is a very nice place to live.

Gordon

I know I'm bringing up an old thread... But are any of you still in Bensheim? I'm an American who lived in Hamburg before, but just moved here and looking to meet some friends in the area :)

I moved to the Hamburg area a few years ago but I had a great time in Bensheim!  I lived in Bensheim and Heppenheim for 2.5 years.

There used to to be an English club in Darmstadt (the one Gordon was talking about) but it disbanded last year. I think some people started a new one but I don't have any more details. I will try to check with my friends to see if and when it meets.

Are you you by any chance working for TE? That is why I moved to Bensheim.

Good luck getting adjusted!  If you have questions you could send me a private message.

Would be great if you still know anyone here you could help to connect me with or could find out the details if anyone is still meeting around here with an English club. :)

No,  I'm not at TE although I guess that's one of the main employers of expats around here.
