Where do Konstanz University students live?

17 posts in this topic

Hey,

I'm moving to Konstanz for Uni in a few months and was wondering where most students live. I'm wondering if a lot of people live on or near campus in student housing or if they get apartments or houses. Where is the best place to live off campus?

Any input would be appreciated!

Peace and love,

Jenn

My bf lived there about 6 years ago and told me horror stories about housing. Apparently it's very difficult to get accommodation. He shared with a friend and I think the living conditions were pretty poor. I'll ask him about it later and give you some more info that actually answers your question if I can. Hopefully it has changed since then. I hear that Konstanz itself is actually really beautiful, so that's something at least. Good luck with it!

Hi Jenn,

my bf said you should check if you're automatically getting placed in housing by the exchange programme. Apparently the places in which the international students are housed are pretty awful. My bf lived in something similar and had a Hungarian guy living on their couch for no apparent reason. The apartment was tiny and had NO BATHROOM (only a communal shower, toilet, etc). He tells me the bed was basically slats and a mattress on the floor. He doesn't remember how much it cost but it wasn't really cheap. He and his friend moved out after two months when they found an apartment on the Swiss border. He has lived in a residential college in Australia as well and found it infinitely better... so it's not just the fact that it was a college (with communal bathrooms, etc) that made it unappealing, rather the poor quality of the housing.

I think it was a really bad time for them. He recommends trying to find a WG if you can and avoid the colleges. Although, his experience was back in 2003 so maybe it has changed since then (I hope so at least). Good luck with the search!! :)

It is tough to find housing in Konstanz. I recommend searching on http://www.vierwaen.de/

Otherwise, the university might be able to help you find something (contact the welcome center). I had a hell of a time finding an apartment, but it can be done! Good Luck!

Many of the international Uni students live in the EuropaHaus, or other Uni buildings. Dorms, basically. They are pretty nice though.

Thanks! I appreciate the advice! So my plans have changed a little bit and I wont be starting there until next March. When should I start looking for housing? I think I want to get a 1 bedroom apartment for my boyfriend and I and skip the student housing thing. You kind of scared me with the horror stories! But, given that it was in 2003 maybe things have changed since then. haha.

Hi all

Jenn, I am sorry for hijacking this thread but I have the exact same query.

Actually, my problem is only slightly different. I am student of RWTH Aachen University and I will be going to ETH, Zurich, Switzerland this September. Now, since I am a non EU-citizen, I need a visa for Swiss and its a tedious costly affair. Also since Zurich is exorbitantly costly to live. Instead, I am planning to live in Konstanz and commute daily to Zurich.

I have sent some mails to Konstanz university for dorm rooms and since I will not belong to that university, I do not know if I am allowed to occupy any room. So I think I need to search for WGs only. Could someone please suggest some ways to find luck with finding accommodation in Konstanz?

Thanks and regards from Aachen.

Hi all,

I'm starting at Uni Konstanz too and of course I'm looking for housing. I can sign up for student accommodation but I would prefer to have something slightly more spacious. I want to avoid just renting one room and I don't really want to live in a WG so I'm looking at 2 room apts around the Uni and I'm finding some attractive options but I am nervous that anyone will rent to me for just 2 years. I know most people stay in a place for much longer so I would imagine landlords aren't going to want to go through the hassle of finding a new tenant in 24 month. What you all think?

There are places to rent in Konstanz but it all depends on how much money you want to spend. If you are willing to pay 500 or more euros per month, it should not be that difficult to find a nice apartment close to the Uni. Two bedrooms will likely be more than 700 euros. A good place to contact is the university Welcome Center:

They have connections to many private renters near the university, but you will have to be prepared to pay more than a typical student!

My daughter has applied for student accommodation in Konstanz though so far, there’s nothing available for October this year. Various private apartments advertised on websites don’t seem genuine...‘send Kaution to foreign bank account or to AirBnb etc and then we’ll send you the address and key‘.  The ads look all too perfect, too inexpensive and disappear very quickly.

Can anyone recommend any trustworthy Makler in the Konstanz area or, any other decent means of acquiring accommodation.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Does the accommodation have to be in Konstanz town or can it be anywhere in the district and how much do you want to spend?

No, not necessarily in the town though within a reasonable distance from the Konstanz Uni or the Hochschule...Maximum 600€ per month (warm) plus possible car parking space.

I have come across offers on here from time to time that I wouldn't have found through a different search:

Rooms:

https://www.immobilo.de/suchergebnisse?s=lowest_price_first&l=78462&r=25km&usageType=private&t=flat_share%3Arental&a=de.78462&pf=&pt=&rf=0&rt=0&sf=&st=&yf=&yt=&ff=&ft=&pa=&o=&ad=&u=

Flats:

https://www.immobilo.de/suchergebnisse?s=lowest_price_first&l=78462&r=25km&usageType=private&t=apartment%3Arental&a=de.78462&pf=&pt=&rf=0&rt=0&sf=&st=&yf=&yt=&ff=&ft=&pa=&o=&ad=&u=

You can limit the search to closer by. I set the search radius to within 25km.

A couple of options across just a few minutes away over the border in Kreuzlingen (if that's a possibility):

https://flatfox.ch/en/flat/rankstrasse-3-8280-kreuzlingen/260997/

https://flatfox.ch/en/flat/grenzstrasse-7-8280-kreuzlingen/241199/

https://flatfox.ch/en/flat/8280-kreuzlingen/210291/

Still within budget despite being in Switzerland.

Thank you...we’ll look at these links tomorrow.  I guess there’s no way of determining a real offer from a fake one...

I live right down the street from the Seezeit Hall in Paradies.  The Seezeit residences are the normal student dorms.  We are next to the river and from here one takes a bus to the Uni.  The Hochschule is right here in Paradies though.
