Cross-country ski tours

So we start the season by heading up to the Leutasch valley above Mittenwald and Seefeld, which at a height of over 1,100 metres already has plenty of snow. The long distance makes this a long day out and the weather will be cold, but from a technical perspective the route we'll be taking is graded "easy" and is thus suitable for beginners. Information on what to wear and bring can be found in the top post above.

Meeting time is 8.10 a.m. at Munich Hauptbahnhof, in front of Radius Tours, which is located behind the BOB ticket office by platforms 27-36 (map). We take the train to Mittenwald (journey time: 1:50h) and then a bus (25 mins) up to and along the Leutasch valley to the village of Leutasch-Weidach. In Weidach we hire skis and then head out on the trails.

We'll be following "easy" trails (A10, A6, A5; map (PDF)). These add up to a total of 12.6 km, with plenty of options to either shorten or lengthen the route as desired and as time permits. We'll stop for lunch in a restaurant after an hour or so, with another couple of hours of skiing in the afternoon. Arrival time back in Munich is 7.30 p.m. if everything goes OK and 9.30 p.m. if it doesn't.

The weather forecast for Sunday isn't looking too bad under the circumstances: cloudy and with the occasional bit of light snow. It will be cold though. Please bring plenty of cash (no card payment possible) and ID for the ski hire. We'll share Bayern Tickets (€29 for five people) and there will also be around €6 in bus tickets plus the somewhat hefty €6 fee for using the Seefeld Loipen. Ski hire costs €11 for skis, shoes and poles.

Photos from a different route in the same valley can be seen in the gallery.

complete beginner (well, almost, tried once 15 years ago and fell over a lot... hope that's going to be OK?)

PS: Does this BOB trian stop/connect with the S3 at Deisenhofen or Holzkirchen?

That's the one, Gen; everything is set up now but it seems to only be the Arena area by the ski jumps and C1 (World Cup loipe) which are closed. Leutasch, Wilmoosalm etc. are fine. Have fun everyone, it snowed again today.

That was only the first tour of the season but the conditions were already better than on any of the ten or twelve tours that we did last year: sunshine, fresh snow, beautiful scenery, no wind. Next tour is planned for Friday, December 30.
