Kühtai/Praxmar season finale

Sunday 10 April

  • 11 km of trails in two neighbouring resorts
  • Grade: Blue/red (easy/medium)
  • Suitable for: Intermediates, advanced
  • Technique: Kühtai classic only, Praxmar classic and skating
  • Ski hire: No

Despite the unseasonably warm weather recently there are still a few options for our final tour of the season, although of course it means heading up high. With up to 15 cm of fresh snow falling on Friday and Saturday and bright but cold weather (max. 4°C) forecast for Sunday, everything is coming together nicely. Do not expect big skiing distances though.

The plan is to drive to Kühtai (2,000m) in the morning and ski the 6 km of trails currently groomed there. Then we drive around the corner to the excellent Alpengasthaus Praxmar for lunch before in the afternoon skiing the 5 km of loops still groomed at Praxmar (1,700m, photo below), our favourite high-altitude destination.

Meeting time is 8 a.m. at Angelo Hotel Leuchtenbergring (100 metres from Leuchtenberg S-Bahn and from Einsteinstraße tram/bus stop) (link to map). We travel by 9-seater minibus. Driving time each way is 2 hours and travel costs will be around €25 per person for vehicle hire and fuel. Please note that the plans may change if a better option materialises, but meeting time/place remains the same.

Spoke to the tourist office in Kühtai and the guesthouse in Praxmar and both are cautiously positive about the condition of their respective trails, but be aware that many of the trails are already closed so these really are the final dregs. Keep expectations suitably managed. There was some new snow last night and it's snowing lightly there now.
