A German IPA is born

I need a sit-down and a glass of water.

I was actually planning on going there on Monday because I had the use of a car, but it's the wrong side of town for me and I ran out of time. D'oh.

Right dan when are we going shopping at this place? I'm free on Monday. Just retried the chocolate stout from veldensteiner by the way, it's pretty darn good.

I'm free on Monday too. They're only open until 19:00 of course, but lunchtime would be ideal.

Edit:

So Nov. 8 is the next one, and I can't go then. Someone else better start a thread if you want to go that day then. :(

Hang on, are you telling me I can walk into Frische Paradies this afternoon and buy all the products in this list, including Rodenbach and Boon Geuze?

They have almost everything available on site, but not everything. I couldn't buy the Geuze, for example, although they had it for tasting.

The tasting is fairly good by the way, last time I was there they were happy to go through every beer that was on the list.

Expensive though, obviously.

Yeah, exactly.

Drank the Brooklyn Brewery Ale the other night. Nice to have something different, but wasn't sufficiently impressed to buy it regularly.

Happy to report that http://www.ganick-getraenke.de/schoenhauser.html in P-Berg got the message and now offers 30+ non-German beers. While I didn't see an IPA, the selection is quite good. Priced on average 1.50.

It's true, I just went to Ganick on schönhauser last thursday and they do have a pretty great beer selection, including many trappist beers (eg Orval for1,85€ a bottle). But the real question is: how was the Hopfen Fluch?

Me, bueschen, and a few others tried the Hopfenfluch last weekend. It was good. It was a welcome change from Helles. But the beer doesn't justify the cost.

Here's my official review:

Appearance - Medium golden and yellow. Looked like a Pils. Minimal head and lacing (it was recently traveled)

Smell - Light (too light?) hoppy aroma, not much else detected. Not a very full smelling beer.

Taste - Started out with a decent hoppy taste. Well bittered as it went down. A good balance between the two.

Mouth Feel - Thick and full bodied with light carbonation.

Overall Drinkability - I enjoyed this beer. Very nice with a good mix between hops and bitter. A stronger aroma would push it higher up the scale.

As Cincy said, it is a bit pricey but I agree it makes for a fine "special occasion" beer.

Sounds great, thanks Bueschen, but to be honest I think in my mind there was never any question that I would buy this beer.

Ha, great, guess which brewery we've got a tour of later this month...?! 8% though, that's gotta hurt. It's not listed on their website though so I wonder if it's only brewed for export.

You might want to have a look at these 2 places to buy 'beverages:'

it would seem that they may have produced an American style IPA.

So given that India Pale Ale originated in England, or maybe india (whatever), why exactly is this beer 'American Style'? I don't really give a shit about beer, but my only experience of American beer is the stuff that pubs in provincial towns in the south-east of England sell, and don't really taste of anything.

It did indeed originate in England, but American brewers have more recently adapted the style, namely by putting far too many hops into it. So a pale ale with lots of hops will generally be referred to as an "American-style" IPA. If IPAs were American in the first place then the modifier would be unnecessary.

Your experience of American beer is not representative of the American brewing culture.
