English macbook not working with German wi-fi

I don't know the answer to that exactly (Google 'router model name', and 'maximum IP addresses'), but domestic routers should be able to handle around 10. Enterprise class routers can handle hundreds.

It should be able to handle plenty of Ip addresses by default, I was just wondering if it was changed.

A 169.x.x.x address means that you arent getting an IP address.

There is currently only one other laptop connected to the network. There have previously been 3 working at the same time.

Thanks for the link Chocky, I had seen that before but I'm wary of updating the firmware in case I disable the Internet for everybody.

If you have physical access to the Wireless Router, try switching it off (i mean power off) and then on again.

I had similar problems with mine and after a lot of effort, I just restarted my wireless router. Guess what, it worked for me :D

@zeiger, thanks but I've already powered the router off and on several times.

I have now managed to get the Dell connected. When asked for the WEP key I had previously entered the password rather than the longer encrypted version. The same trick does not work for the Macbook.

STOP THE PRESS!

I have been able to connect via the "Assist Me" button. When I had entered the password initially I had typed the unencrypted version (as told by my host family). When I EDITED the password to the encrypted key (found in router settings) it did nothing. When I set up a new location and entered the encrypted key during setup, it worked. I'm still not sure why, but my Dell, iPhone and Macbook are now all wirelessly connected.

After hours of head scratching and going round and round in circles, I am finally up and running.

I hope this solution will bring relief to people searching in future!

Thanks so much for all your suggestions : )

DYM: I think you mean it's one of those routers where you type a password of your choice and it generates from this a hexidecimal wep key for connecting?

If so I can't say this enough: suggest that they write the REAL SSID and WEP password on a bit of paper and stick it to the bottom of the router, this saves so many headaches.

(p.s. not sure how you were connected to the Internet before then...)

@dcgi yes I eventually found out the router had generated a hex key from their password. This does not explain how I was allowed to get online for at least one hour on the same Macbook, when I was still trying to connect with the unencrypted password. It just doesn't make sense!
