Berlin is a fantastic place to live, but that the city is allowing this kind of thing to happen makes my blood boil.

I hear you, it's virtually impossible to distinguish the leftist tossers from the Nazis, they all wear black and are there purely for a scrap. Anyway, look on the bright side, it only lasts for one day, and hopefully some of those tossers will be locked up for a few days..

"blah blah blah, why can't the government just beat some people up blah blah blah

Berlin: get a spine and grow some balls!

Perhaps the fact that the people of Berlin, rather than the government set the rules for one day shows that Berlin has a lot more balls than wherever it is that you come from. Your bleating and begging for a government clampdown makes you sound like you belong in one of the other 99% of cities that would engage in violent tactics to stop this kind of expression of anger.

I personally believe that May day is a healthy thing in Berlin, and although I will not be attending, and will certainly run a mile from the slightest hint of violence in X-berg, where I live, I support the fact that thousands of Berliners will come out tomorrow and give a big 'fuck you' to the police and the government. Germany has the right to be mistrusting of government, and has experienced the worst of civil complacency in recent history. They are right to have their day of disobedience, and if you don't like it, then move back to Britain or America or wherever you come from, and enjoy having your rights slowly eroded from under you.

Berlin has been the headquarters of the most despicable government in the last 100 years. Don't rely on them allowing government and authority to have things their own way for the next 100 years.

Een before that. In May of 1929, right-wing police in Berlin went and shot innocent rioters. 33 dead, 198 injured. Won't ever happen again, or Berlin will burn.

Part 1:

Very funny here (you couldn't make it up) is the baldy guy in black at 0:54,he clearly gets an SMS and is stupid enough to read it,allowing the Polizei to seize the opportunity to charge. It seems so obviously brain dead that the more I watch it I begin to wonder was he undercover.

Sounds like a 16 year old's view of 'sticking it to the man'. The simple fact is that these sort of protests do absolutely bugger all to stop any 'rights [being] slowly eroded', as you put it, and many countries have this sort of problem, look to London most May 1st's, you have the same psuedo-anarchists trashing macdonalds/hsbc once a year.

If they really wanted to change 'the system' they'd get politically active and go the democratic route, unfortunately I don't think your average bottle-throwing lout would know where to begin, they're all there as 1st May seems to be more or less 'throw shit at police and feel vindicated day'.

They don't understand that the police are not there to repress you but to keep order while you protest, unfortunately they end up taking the brunt of the bottles/missiles.

Yes, I know it looks scary when the police charge, but the video above as an example, they simply don't want them to gain ground and establish a position as this is the precursor to a riot which we all know ends up in innocent people getting hurt/killed.

Sorry to be so grown-up & boring.

We've been invited to a friend's right by Kottbusser Tor this afternoon. I'd like to go, and if things get rough just stay at the friend's for a s long as required, but we have people visiting us this evening so would need to be home (mitte) by 6.30. Does going to Kottbusser Tor and needing to get out of there by a particular time seem a crazy/unrealistic idea??

@thomas31: apparently ~10,000 left-wing anarchists marching around that general area today, I think anything is possible.

Yes, thank god for those stalwart defenders who protect my rights by burning random cars and throwing bottles at cops..

what lilplatinum said.

How do people expect marching on a demo to have any effect whatsoever on people with rightwing mindsets?

take it as a sign against neonazism. it is good to see, that there are many people not tolerating racism and going to the streets because of that.

and going to kotti today is totally harmless until ~8 and it's of course no problem leaving :D

@thomas31: as far as I can tell from what I saw in previous years, if your friends live right on Adalbertstraße, Naunynstraße or so, the street in front of the house may be packed with rioters after five or six. It usually doesn't take long for the police to clear a spot, but sometimes the action may last a half hour or more.

I think the che-clad socialists and the neo-nazis will find they have more in common than one would think. Namely their socialist approach to economics. Nazi did stand for National Socialist German Workers' Party after all.

Anyone who went, is there a good place to set up a lawn chair and have a margarita while watching two groups of socialists beat the shit out of each other? Sounds better than anything on TV.
