Although, we do have a thread about Irish music so, if you have anything to say about the music, that might be the best place to say it .

My parents are going to Ireland this September! I'm so jealous! (Though they're taking a bus tour - not so jealous about that.)

 

I had to cancel my own trip to Kilkenny this August . Hubby got to go to Ecuador instead.

What a great topic! I actually keep up with all things Irish by downloading a lot of RTE Radio programmes, e.g., Liveline, Pat Kenny, Gerry Ryan and Marion Finucane. I listen to them when I'm Nordic Walking or driving around for my job.

 

Difficult times over there just now, between the church, the Government and the banks, not sure when is the worst!

Anybody seen The Secret of Roan Inish? Pretty good fillum about selkies, not overly sentimental, IMHO. Good music. My daughter got the DVD for Easter.

If you asked me where the bestest place to go in Ireland. If you were free as birds, I would say "The Antrim Coast".

 

Then again, Wexford is great .. if you go to Dublin, down to Wicklow you have got to stop off at Powerscourt Gardens with its wonderful waterfall.

 

Then, of course you cannot go past Glendalough without stopping.

 

Interesting is:

When my parents-in-law came over for our wedding and we spent the day in Wicklow. It was suggested that we go to the German Cemetery. I had never heard about it. Whereas I love going to graveyards I am not one for soldier graveyards. This, however, was quite different. Peaceful, interesting ... Maybe not for you. I am just saying that it is there. (I think few people know about it) I think a lot of those who are buried there were washed up to shore.

 

My recommendation: Do not go to the breweries or distilleries .. I hear they are a disappointment.

 

If you are in Dublin go and have a meal in my favourite restaurant, Cornucopia (near Trinity College)

This is more about domestic violence which is a universal problem rather than an Irish problem, where a woman has found the only way out.

 

If I may quote from the article:

 

 

At her sentencing hearing yesterday, Burke’s daughter, Linda, in a victim impact statements said she understood why her mother had taken her father’s life.

• She said her earliest memory was standing at the top of the stairs in her pyjamas, watching her father hold a shotgun to her mother’s head and threatening to “blow her head off”. Her father’s death was shocking to her because she had always been convinced it would be he who would take her mother’s life.
• Her older siblings Natasha and Declan, said “she has served a lifetime since the day she was married”.
• She had written a suicide note for her children, but her youngest son found her and rang an ambulance.

I am glad the Irish judge heard.

Used to go there but my head eventually became too wrecked with the complete lack of seating. Thou i think they have recently expanded the seating area.
