Christmas tree disposal and recycling

45 posts in this topic

Hiya,

being Twelfth Night and all, today is the day when I bid farewell to my fine Christmas tree. Which is a shame really as it has been a good one. Like the last three years it came from the Turkish guy in front of Spar at Rotkreuplatz and like the others it has not shed a needle, HURRAH! I also add glycerine to the water which helps too BTW.

Anyway, Munich City Council used to set up collection points for people to leave their trees so that people didn't fill up their Biomülltonne and there was always an ad in the paper for it. Not this year though. Has the scheme been stopped? Ideas please!

Thanks

Katrina

I found this page: muenchen.de / christba

Looks like you will have to drop it off somewhere or hack it to bits and put it in your biomüll. Unless you have more than 20 trees, in which case they will come and collect them for free.

Hi,

there are a few problems with burning it in that I looked after it well so it wouldn't burn that easily - green wood and all that. I live in a flat without a garden as well.

Anyway I bought a small handsaw, hacked the thing up with a tear in my eye (because it was a nice tree) and it fitted into the Biomüll with over half of the room the spare . after I'd crushed it down a bit. And the whole lot was done and dusted inside of half an hour.

So be warned: I not only have two different power drills, an electric screwdriver and a toolkit full of gear, I now have a saw and know how to use it.

Cheers

They're cheap. I got mine in Obi but you can pick one up in any store that has a hardware section. Even Hertie stock them.

Here's the info for tree disposal in 2005.

You can burn off hard-won Christmas poundage by sawing the thing into bits and sticking it in your Biomüll.

Tchibo are doing a saw which will do the job for 5,99€. Other places do good ones for similar money, but this is a readily available folding saw so might be of interest for other purposes e.g. football violence, nights out in Essex, etc..

I took my Xmad tree to one of the "official" places this morning, having persuaded my other half to go into work later so he could help me. Turned out the trees were all just piled up on the street outside the school, so you could really go anytime. Boyf was not amused. Might be worth checking out for those people who work and therefore can't go between 8 and 5. You can take the trees today, tomorrow and Wednesday. For a full list of collection points, see Katrina's link above.

Because that wasn't the place to dump them.

You are in Chermany you know - Zucht und Ordnung!

I sawed mine into bits with a hacksaw (took bloody ages) and then bunged it in our Biomüll. Legal that is.

There is a thread on where you could have taken it somewhere.

Contact Team 3 on this link or send them an email (I wouldn't admit that one of the trees belongs to you though).

am going to hack up my tree today, as it's in a fast decline and needles falling like snow.

Not that any of you really would care - am just feeling a bit proud of myself for searching first, rather than starting a new thread about what to do with my tree. :)

muenchen.de provide a good guide (in german) of what to do with your christmas tree this year...

If you bio rubbish container is full in the house, between monday 9th - wednesday 11th, you can drop your tree off at one of the schools listed.

p.s. I know one little lady who got an axe for christmas, heaven help us

Ah but such a tree doesn't burn that well so even though a bit of axe (wo)manship would have got me nice and warmed up for the return to work, I took my tree along to my local collection point this morning.

Was sad to see it go as it had served me very well *sigh*, it is good to start the day with something ticked off the big to do list in any case.

When I lived in Frankfurt before here, people would take their trees to the Zoo, as the elephants like to eat Chrissie trees

Actually old Xmas tree branches make brilliant firelighters, you just have to let them dry out. Of course this takes all year so you have to have somewhere to keep them. My nextdoor neighbour dumps his tree in my garden, I chop it up, put it in the wood shed and use it next winter. :)

To the topic of what belongs in which bin -- there is actually an English-language handout explaining what goes in Biomull (brown compost bin) /Papier / Restmull . This is the trifold ("3-Tonne")system that is picked up at your house or apartment. This information is on the same website as Katrina's link -- there are more German brochures here.

Anyone know how to recycle a Christmas tree in Munich? Do they pick them up on the side of the street sometime in January? Did a search but couldn't find any info on this subject. My tree is wilted and quickly becoming a fire hazard..thanks!

Nevermind - got it! This site is great: muenchen.de / christba
