How to deal with the German mentality/rudeness

Hello

Today I made a bad experience in fact I asked a German man for direction in the city in German. Suddenly he started to shout at me in German. I didn't understand everything but it was something like I should learn proper German before I come to his country and that I should go back where I come from.

I was totally offended. I am a beginner in German but at least I try to speak German. What should I do in such situations?

Neither is a knife in the stomach. Do you really want to escalate a situation with a potentially unbalanced or racist man*? If you can't stop yourself at least wait until he's safely across the street or something.

*a 30 years old italian engineer got one and died in a similar situation during a walk alongside the river, in downtown Munich, with his girlfriend.

Next time say this:

§185 Beleidigung

Die Beleidigung wird mit Freiheitsstrafe bis zu einem Jahr oder mit Geldstrafe bestraft.

Then look at him and say this:

Wenn eine Beleidigung auf der Stelle erwidert wird, so kann der Richter beide Beleidiger oder einen derselben für straffrei erklären, du Arschloch!

I think Rick is trying to say that the guy you asked is a a***hole. Ignore him and ask someone else, which is exactly what I would advise as well. Sadly there are jerks everywhere on this planet, Germany included.

Kudos for asking in German, most people will take that as a good thing and try even harder to help you. The guy you spoke to is an idiot. Pretend the whole thing never happened and keep doing just what you did.

Exactly. Life is too short to let people like that upset you. Unfortunately, the world is full of such idiots. Just thank them, wish them a nice day and go ask someone else. Really, thanking them and wishing them a nice day is probably the worst thing you can to do these types of people. They hate it, especially if you actually sound like you mean it. You'll feel better about yourself as well for dealing with them in this manner.

Yes it can be dangerous. I can't be sure what he would do next.

Yes it would be the best to ignore such idiots but I am very sensitive about this.

Most people I have met appreciate my effort to speak German. Mostly I mix it with some English words because I don't know the German words and I have problems with the pronunciation.

Maybe I will do it next time.

Do you think he would say the same if I would look like a Brit or is it just because I look like a Latino or a Spaniard? Do you think he is a racist or even a Nazi? I assume that he thought I would be a refugee.

This is the norm - most people appreciate that you are trying, and it will get easier with time.

The guy's an idiot, end of story (for you at least). He probably also tells off little kids for sneezing too loud. Whether he is also racist or what he was thinking is completely irrelevant, you will never see him again. You're doing the right thing, he is a jerk. Be glad that you are not part of his small, bitter world and pretend the whole thing never happened.

www.clearlycultural.com

Germany is Masculine,Holland and Scandinavia are tender feminine societies.Do you think the above is true? German women dont strike me as particularly caring and gente, quite often the contrary. But this study doesnt take into account regionalism

Clearly true.

German women are more downtrodden.

Look at the business world for a clear example.

What gets me is how rude some supermarket cashiers are. Thankfully self checkouts are on the way to solving this problem.

As I've mentioned on another thread, that's the beauty of wearing a mask in Germany. Simply give the cashier a thousand-yard stare (looking slightly deranged helps) whilst silently mouthing "Fcuk you, you [insert additional situation specific expletives here]" and then smile to yourself. You'll feel a lot better.

And we wonder why some Germans don't like foreigners!

But this is the only thing they see. That's the beauty of it.

Personally, I don't find cashiers rude at all. Maybe one is having a bad day or is overworked.

While I'm here, lately I have had to ask for assistance from strangers (Germans) to help me take off my coat and put it back on. They are extremely helpful and polite. Every one.

Absolutely! The more pyscho the better. I practise in the mirror every morning.

Neither do I. But, I will admit 15 years ago it was a bit of a culture shock. As was all Germans and Germany as a whole.

So, I did an online diploma at Dave Grohl's Foofighter Academy™ where I learnt how to say "Fcuk you motherfcuker" with a smile on my face. I've had no problems since. I think Dave's doing Ok as well.

Sometimes they are even funny. Last time I was back in Germany the cashier at Netto couldn't return me a 1-Cent coin, being generous I told her to keep it and use it to have a nice evening. Her reply was: thank you, can I invite my husband as well?

Bizarre comment #1:

Huh? We're talking about customer service. As we all live in Germany I sense we may be talking about German customer service.
