UK TV to be available over the Internet

Ha ha ha ha... You couldn't be further from the truth, I don't need to read newspapers about things. I talk and work with the people involved. BskyB has always attacked the Beeb. Same as the Beeb has always counter programmed against ITV.

Google? Nope.

Girls, handbags down please.

It is the case that the Murdochs have the knives out for Auntie Beeb.

They don't mind her running the odd doccumentary for immigrant vegan lesbians but go beserk when the BBC is active in a mass popular segment as they think they have God given right to make a shed load of money in that area rather than it being a public service.

Cameron's a sneaky aristo knut natch, but let's be under no illusions, the Murdochs and Berlusconis of this world have plenty of mates in Labour too.

Hmmm...this could get interesting as the internet is moving forward, while service providers are putting caps on bandwidth and speeds.

I don't know anyone who can provide your area with something a bit faster than DSL1000, but I can at last recommend you (and anyone else) to move to Dresden-Striesen/-Blasewitz, because as of recently, we have VDSL 50 (50,000 kbit-downloads to you), thanks to Deutsche Telekom having finally got their act together after (from my perspective) 5 years of dithering about...

I received a call from them again last week and we still don't have it. We even tried contacting DSL Ausbau, as did T-mobile, and neither of us got a response. The situation was/is the persistent problem of the fact that they wired the neighborhoods for coaxial, while the buildings, especially newer ones like ours, have fiber optics. The last we spoke to T-mobile was that they were letting us out of our contract because they simply can not fix the problem, and they are unwilling to wire the buildings in order to make money. They also conceded that the Web and Walk does not work, including a verification from their technicians who came out to the area and performed numerous repairs to the infrastructure, which entitles us to some 18 months of discounts they are conveniently not talking about now. I got the 02 stick and easily it's working close to the max of 3.6, when T never got past about 1.

So if you have it, it's not because of the neighborhood getting it. Somehow, your building got converted. Additionally, they do offer Satellite DSL, but it's a PITA.

@yorkshire:

That is the trend, yes. They keep bitching that the internet will reach terminal mass because it wasn't designed for the bandwidth we are using. They're basically being dinosaurs now, holding it back, since the progression of technology and demand is faster than they are willing to foresee and invest.

...and apart from your rather insular and somewhat biased experience on this topic, what other evidence do you have?

You didn't mention exactly where you live, trek11000, but in case you're not aware of it you might find some stuff relevant to your situation and location on one of the 65 pages of this DSL for Dresden forum including possible mention of DSL successes/failures in your street. On page 34 of the forum there's a phone number in Erfurt (0180 5 180 380) for the DSL in Dresden coordination team that you might like to try - worked for me.

As already stated, as of 1 December I've been enjoying my lovely new VDSL 50...

Nevertheless when I enter my area code and phone number onto Telekom websites they still tell me that DSL (let alone VDSL) is "not available" at my address.

Are we saying now that internet technology now is going to make satellite obsolete? Where will Murdoch be then has he got his own system or is he going to stop it and how can he? Will all the none sky channels on his network defect?

It's definitely tending that way, and is one reason why Murdoch resists initiatives like Canvas. Media delivery over internet always lacked a decent connection speed and with ADSL2, VDSL and cable services these are now readily available. This facilitates HD quality, true multimedia services, TV-on-demand and 2-way interaction (gaming is a largely untapped market) as well as remote control, all of which provide additional broadcaster income with minimal outlay. Enterprising broadcasters can also look more closely at fringe markets (e.g. expatriate, cultural or professional niches) and attack them commercially with minimal additional cost. Bandwidth restrictions on satellite services and the costs to increase or even implement said bandwidth never allowed such flexibility with such ease. Geographic control and advertising issues remain a hurdle, albeit a very minor one. From the consumer side, it's cheaper and easier to implement and provides more flexibility. WiFi and WiMax based services in and to the home even remove the need and inconvenience of cabling around the house - the future, and it really is just around the corner as there are no technological issues to solve, is WiFi-based internet capable TVs connected on the home network, situated anywhere in the home.

... but T-com is the worst service company outside of Bell Canada.

- not forgetting British Telecom, France Telecom and probably all Telecom companies - big is definitely not beautiful

Agree with your post except that this kind of service still has to be rolled out outside of major cities (even to the city suburbs).

I live in a Munich city suburb where 50Mbit VDSL has been available since the middle of last year. National, state and community funding are further encouraging high-speed internet implementation.

Is it possible to get BBC/ITV over the internet in Munich? I'd be interested in all methods that anyone has found works reliably whether it involves payment or not.

Project Canvas has now been officially named "YouView" and will launch in he first half 2011. The YouView website also went online today

The service will combine live TV streams including HD content from industry collaborators who include BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five and will include access to ITV Player, BBC iPlayer and 4OD for archived material as well as subscription based on-demand TV services. Bonus material from YouTube, Facebook and Flickr will also be provided by the service. Both hardware and software solutions will be available to maximise channel access.

The IP Content Delivery Specification requires system builders to include proxy configuration in the network set up of the unit, which can only be good news for expatriate consumers.

Grumbling in the background, Sky are also ramping up Video on Demand services and propose to launch their existing Skyplayer services on Humax Freesat boxes in the new year. This is in addition to collaboration to carry the service on XBox 360 systems and on UK terrestrial Freeview hardware.

All this comes hot on the heels of the BBC committing to provide iPlayer access abroad within the year

All the BBC/ITV/Channel 4/Channel 5 channels are already broadcast live on the internet.

The link to BBC1 for example is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/watchlive/

You need to connect over a VPN or similar to get around the geoblocking. I use: http://www.viewtvabroad.com/, pay £6.49 per month & have had no problems so far.

You can then also use BBC iplayer, ITV player etc as well as the US services such as Hulu & the players from NBC/ABC etc.

Disclaimer: I am not connected to www.viewtvabroad.com in any way & cannot guarantee it will work as well for you as it does for me!
