Funny German car registrations

I have recently purchased a new car and haven't selected a plate yet. What is the procedure to do that? is it when you go to the city hall? How do you know that are the initial letters? do they have like a map with the possible initials?

The first letters are dependent on the city you live in, so you don't have choice about that. In the city I live in, you are able to reserve your plate number online so you don't have to go through all the possible combinations to find something when you go to the city hall. I think it depends on the city what services are available, but I believe no matter what you will have to go in person to the city hall to confirm it as they will want to see your documentation.

There are so many possibilities if you've only got 1 letter for your city or region but for the others it's (usually) not that easy to have an interesting/funny combo.

Isn't Stuttgart just an S? And if you live in Hamburg (and it's not a company car) you'll need to register it in Hamburg to pay the tax there and for insurance purposes.

PS: You'll be wishing you'd remained in Stuttgart to have a tasty plate like S-EX 69 or something. Now you'll be stuck with a very original HH-SV-nnnn.

I saw a big black & white car with PAN-DA xxxx as its plate, pretty good, as well as SAD-ME on a pimped up BMW 3 series, which struck me as highly appropriate. Many wankers round here driving X5s and the like with STA-RK. Even if your name is Reinhold Kleinschwanz you still look like a twat with the STA-RK plate. It's like the twats driving their pride and joy in Munich with M-AX plates, tossers the lot of them.

For my car I wanted M-OO but they only give that in Munich Land...

I don't get it. What did he have no idea about? What's wrong with WMP? Windows Media Player?
