The Irish accent has beaten its French counterpart as the world's sexiest, thanks to stars like Colin Farrell and James Nesbitt.

Colin Farrell was credited as promoting the Irish accent's 'sexiness'

Men with an Emerald Isle brogue came top in a poll of 5,000 women worldwide, while the French accent only came fourth, just ahead of Australian.

Italian, the native language of stars such as jockey Frankie Dettori, was second.

In third place was the Scottish burr, made famous by actor Sean Connery

English was sixth and Swedish was seventh, with Spanish, Welsh and American completing the top 10.

A spokesman for www.OnePoll.com, which carried out the international survey, blamed French president Nicolas Sarkozy for the French accent's fall from grace.

"The French accent is nowhere near as popular as it used to be," he said.

''You can probably blame Nicolas Sarkozy for that, he has single-handedly changed the perception of how the world sees French men.

''It is good news for the Irish that they have come top, they have been in and around the top five for years now.

''But high-profile stars such as Colin Farrell have helped bring the accent more to the fore.''

The study also found three fifths of women admitted they hade been seduced by someone purely because of their accent, while two fifths said they would much rather sleep with a man who had a nice accent, compared to a harsh one.

in fairness grampus, when you don't come from england, like me, it is harder to distinguish. It's only recently, as I have got to know a couple of English people quite well, that I am beginning to discern the difference between the places. I can't tell the difference between a US and canadian accent for example, or an Australian and a Kiwi.

WTF, are you kidding me, alex?? You didn't see me going gaga over KD and Tiggi's guy (can't remember his TT name) speaking Gaelic and talking about Guinness commercials? I call bollocks on your statement :-P You're just jealous cause you have that Irish surname and you can't deliver the accentual goods. ;)

All I could hear was noise Kate. It went something along the lines of 'fnar fnar fnar Ballymena', 'fnar fnar fnar Dublin', 'fnar fnar fnar do you remember that episode in Father Ted when....'

Maybe the title of the report should read 'The Irish accent has beaten its French counterpart as the world's least comprehendible, thanks to stars like Colin Farrell and James Nesbitt.' :)

Or "Irish accent has beaten its French counterpart as the world's sexiest, but really they should all just speak Gaelic".

I remembered something along the lines of "fnar fnar fnar MY surname is more Irish than YOOOOURS" ;)

A poll of 5,000 women worldwide, all of them living in the UK and the US? Come on, how many people from non-English speaking countries can distinguish the accents of Irish, Scots, Australians and people from the US?

Fnar fnar according to this website my 'Kelly' beats KDs 'Murphy' 15 - 12 fnar fnar. Intriguingly I even win in his home county.

Irish names by County

You owe me a Guinness back KKK :)

Although according to this one, he wins. So QED scientifically speaking this is a draw, so it is.

This poll is 100% correct. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, sexier than an Irish brogue. ;)

I agree, an Irish accent is often extremely sexy and some of the accents are the sexiest, agreed hands down.

BUT it often depends where the person comes from in Ireland and how they talk. Some of the extreme Ulster accents are like a chisel in your brain. At the other extreme the soft accents, often found in the south are wonderful.

Thing is Farrell's accent is a cool Dublin one, while Nesbitt has a nasely northern one (good for singing (bad) country music). These accents are so different that they could hardly be grouped together. Another really cool Dublin accent is Gabriel Byrne in Millers Crossing. Lets see,(danielF are you up for this)...we now know the secret is out about the Irish and their accent...imagine it took them this long to figure out why we are so successful with the opposite sex. The big Question is which Irish accent is the sexiest. I for one think that the Dublin accent of Farrell and Byrne are up there with the best, then you have the fair City accent at the other end of the scale, with the Bob Geldoff "roight ok like" somewhere in the middle.

But County by county, my least favourite have to be Wexford, Louth, Monaghan east Belfast, Donegal, . Outside Dublin favourites would be Cork,Kerry Galway, Kilkenny, I hope all of this is of some use.

and am sure it's not just Colin's accent that women find attractive, rather the whole package.

Sexist poll and thus can be ignored.

Females speaking English with a soft French accent is one of the most trouser stirring events in the whole world.

Irish accent doesn't even get close.

Another really cool Dublin accent is Gabriel Byrne in Millers Crossing.

Gabriel Byrne would be sexy even if he suffered from chronic laryngitis. The accent is merely a bonus.

I like a nice Scottish accent, me. The one around Stirling sounds so comfy, especially when being proposed to by an 83 year old man in a bar after half an hour's acquaintance.

I for one think that the Dublin accent of Farrell and Byrne are up there with the best,

Strange that you should think that, being from Dublin and all. I guess you don't notice the effect the Jackeen accent has on other people: it's like a rhinocerous farting into a tuba.

I agree that all accents east of the Bann are like the squeal of a pig in labour; all accents from Cork should be towed into the Lee and torpedoed; Cavan and Monaghan are their own definition of misery; Offaly and Laois barely count as human utterances; Galway and Mayo leave you grasping your wallet and backing towards the door; Wexford and Waterford could easily be mistaken for a flock of incontinent geese; and Thomond is where the shouting is actually to be preferred to anything else.

That doesn't leave us with much, but once you subtract all the mountainy men, biffos, gurriers, gombeens, gits, little men with bum fluff moustaches, and one-hand beating time to country furry dice hangers, only northwest Ulster remains as the true home of sweet, melodious sexiness.

I think the Irish accent is really sexy - but best of all on a German girl who is speaking English with a lilting Irish accent with underlying soft German - man that's really something. I've run into this in Berlin and it's knee melting.

My favorite Irish accent to date is from Galway*. Although certain Dublin accents are also excellent, but I don't know exactly which ones. Just that the guy I "knew" from Dublin (he was a bit working class) could've talked all night and I would have been completely happy.

*Although, to be fair, I couldn't understand half of what me mate from Galway said, his accent was so thick, but the melody was just gorgeous.
