After doing ok for a day I have now got all the classical side effects: Chills, elevated temperature (37°C), headache, lack of energy and even slight conjunctivitis. Do not take this vaccination lightly!

I only got it for visiting my elderly parents and my brother in law who is just finishing up chemo and has no white cells. My doc thought it was a good idea but said that, if I were staying here, he would recommend against it.

I'm hoping my daughter can get the first H1N1 vaccine before we leave for Puerto Rico on Thanksgiving vacation, but it's looking increasingly unlikely. Her pediatrician's office has the vaccine, but not enough for all their patients. They've decided to offer the first batch to 6-12 month-old babies.

Hope you got it at least three weeks before visiting. It takes about that long to assemble your immunological army.

 

@sarabyrd, don't know the actual recipe for the vaccine you got, but with today's technology I doubt that they have used a method whereby you could actually contract the flu (ie heat killed whole virus). Your temp suggests normality and don't listen to those carrying on about being 35.5 as the normal human body fluctuates quite a bit and does so very very quickly. The other symptoms could be from numerous things and even having been already exposed to a variety of flu bugs.

cinzia, I'm so jealous! I announced recently to my husband that I want to go to Puerto Rico. Please do post a thread on the subject when you return. Can you bring me some sub-tropical plants from there? I've got quite a wish list.

I ended up on the couch for three hours with two woolen blankets and a cat, drinking hot tea and shivering from head to toe. After my eyes started itching and my lymph nodes exploded at 38°C I hied myself down to the Schwabinger Krankenhaus for an expedited test (the normal test has a backup of 4 - 5 days in the labs). Result negative for Swine Flu but the doc said I could have a rhinovirus due to my weakened immune system after the flu shot.

The second time this year I take a week off and end up sick.

 

P.S. The Swine Flu test involves a swab of your throat entering through your nostril and costs €25 that you have to pay.

Did you get a jab (killed flu) or mist (live flu), sarabyrd? Usually people have a greater reaction to the mist, is why I was curious.

 

Wouldn't it be strange if someone caught an opportunistic swine flu after their immune system was weakened by the seasonal vaccine? :blink:

Standard jab in your left upper arm. I haven't had the Jab for three years, perhaps this is a new vaccine that I don't have prior antibodies to.

Was it the standard shot, or the swine flu shot? The swine flu shot is a new shot, so the side effects would be different compared to the standard yearly flu vaccine.

Every year it's a "new" shot, because the virus mutates. The base ingredients remain effectively the same.

 

Sara, hope you feel better soon. I am coming down with whatever Jr has, so I am indeed cancelling the jab appts. The immune system can only handle so much!

I will not get a shot. Mainly because I never got a flu shot either and don't see the point now. And I agree, I do not understand the process of getting it accepted so I play the "save card". I see myself washing my hands more often - I mean besides the usual rounds you do and I do not belong to any risk group either.

 

My doctor always says, laughing and smiling is the best medicine, so I attach proof on how it started eventually ;-)
