New Pope is Joseph Ratzinger - from Bavaria

173 posts in this topic

What struck me is how much he looks like a pope. Not just in the kindly grandfather way, though that is part of it, but also in his expressions. When he came out, his triumph was written plainly across his smiling face, but then as the crowd continued to roar, the weight of his responsibility seemed to hit him, and his expression became very sober.

whats all this about him being in the hitler youth?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

apparently he was, but as a child in that climate he wouldn't have had any choice. IIRC he also served in the army, but deserted before the end of the war.

Interesting Guardian summary

The Wehrmacht group that he was in guarded the BMW factory, never fired a shot and ended up in a US POW camp.

Four years ago, he wrote that rock music was "the expression of elemental passions which, in the big musical festivals, have taken on a cultural character, that is to say, [the character] of a counter-cult, opposed to Christian worship".

OK, don't get me wrong. I haven't changed. I still believe in the gradual elimination of The Church through education... and kind of, 'growing-up' for the human psyche, if you will. Haven't had the chance to speak to our priest friend about 'Der Panzerkardinal' yet.

However, The Independent has a pretty good write-up on Ratzinger today:

'God's Rottweiler' does makes the southern baptists look quiet liberal though.

Guess he won't be so keen on meeting Bono then... ;)

Ratzinger is a rat!

WASHINGTON (AFP) - German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican theologian who was elected Pope Benedict XVI, intervened in the 2004 US election campaign ordering bishops to deny communion to abortion rights supporters including presidential candidate John Kerry.

In a June 2004 letter to US bishops enunciating principles of worthiness for communion recipients, Ratzinger specified that strong and open supporters of abortion should be denied the Catholic sacrament, for being guilty of a "grave sin."

He specifically mentioned "the case of a Catholic politician consistently campaigning and voting for permissive abortion and euthanasia laws," a reference widely understood to mean Democratic candidate Kerry, a Catholic who has defended abortion rights.

The letter said a priest confronted with such a person seeking communion "must refuse to distribute it."

A footnote to the letter also condemned any Catholic who votes specifically for a candidate because the candidate holds a pro-abortion position. Such a voter "would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for holy communion," the letter read.

@ Eurovol

Refusing certain folks a CATHOLIC sacrament is their right ... the Pope is just the man on top ... all you nellies can try and knock the man down. Respect to da man fer having the conviction to not just go along with da masses. PResumably you understand what communion represents ?

Yeh we got the transformation so Catholics are supposeta believe it "is". Even with the lesser "representation" it's still a major deal.

He could have also said that voting for a man that starts an illegal war killing thousands of innocent people is also evil and these people should not receive communion either, but he didn't. The "RAT" cannot selectively choose which form of "killing" is worse. George Bush has directly killed more innocent people than Kerry's pro-choice ideology. Fact!
