New Pope is Joseph Ratzinger - from Bavaria

173 posts in this topic

apparently he was, but as a child in that climate he wouldn't have had any choice. IIRC he also served in the army, but deserted before the end of the war.

I'm sure you know all this, you're just trying to stir things up.

Behave yourself

its temporary for the conclave i think - its not a permanent structure.

Nice they are sorted so soon. Good on them.

Some guy on the BBC is wittering on about some comments the new Pope made against the Anglican Church, anyone care to expand?

In his memoirs, Ratzinger wrote that he was enrolled in the Nazi youth movement against his will when he was 14 in 1941, when membership was compulsory. He said he was soon let out because of his studies for the priesthood.

Two years later he was drafted into a Nazi anti-aircraft unit as a helper, a common taks for teenage boys too young to be soldiers. A year later he was released, only to be sent to the Austrian-Hungarian border to construct tank barriers.

He deserted the Germany army in May 1945 and returned to Traunstein -- a risky move, since deserters were shot on the spot if caught, or publicly hanged as examples to others.

@keydeck

Maybe they think "Jospeh" is his middle name?

For the first 18 years of his life, he was under the Nazi regime, but I don't hold that against him. My wife grew up in the DDR and was in the "Young Pioneers".

Here Schotte

Basically he said that the only way through Jesus is via the Catholic Church, not the Anglican Church or any other Christian base religion. In other words, it is Catholic or hell.

From Washington Times

As a native of Germany, cradle of the Protestant Reformation, Ratzinger is intimately familiar with Lutheranism -- all the more so as he is an expert on St. Augustine, whose theology has greatly influenced the thinking of Martin Luther, a former Augustinian monk.

Interesting as if you live in Bavaria you'd have the impression that all of Germany is Catholic.

Bet a lot of boys born now will be called Benedict.

Does this mean Bavaria will have a new holiday? Will Oktoberfest be a special event this year? Will the new PopeMobile be a BMW?

Quote from: Slugger O'Toole - Smoke Signals...

That's William Hill up £15 and me down £15.

I should have known that the Germans always come good in the big tournaments.

There's an excellent summary of opinion on the result here: Eamon Fitzgerald - Benedict XVI

And a photo found via BBC News - Ratzinger Life in Pictures... (you'll recognise the buildings in the background, of course)

Good article Ed Bob. I had a bet going that IF he got it he would go with Benedict...should have done it properly and bet the farm on paddy power. Ah well. You lose some, you lose some more. The 'Benevolent Enforcer' has got quite a ring to it dont you think. <_<

Well he was born on Easter Saturday to parents called Maria and Josef (really).

That a Bayerischer Sepp is now the big boss in the big church, well, that's a big deal.

He'll keep a solid line but at his age it is true that he's seen to be the interim choice.

I also wish that I'd had the money on.

Wonder when we'll get the visit? He could go and stand on the balcony at the Rathaus (makes a change from FC Bayern).
