For me its marmite. Vegemite is ok, but for me marmite just has a better flavor, hard to describe, smoother, yet richer. That applies to vegemite and marmite as purchased in NZ however, it could be that tastes differ in different markets.

URGGGGGGGGGGGG about butter under marmite.

It must be pure and unsullied and in full contact with the bread.

Butter need not apply when marmite's application is already being processed.

vegemite.

hands down.

We're happy little vegemites, as bright as bright can be!

We all enjoy our vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea!

Our mummy says we're growing stronger every single week

Because we love our vegemite

We all adore our vegemite

It puts a rose in every cheek!

I personally like Vegemite, but I've never tried Marmite. Of course Marmite will win the poll - there are a hell of a lot more Brits here than Aussies and Kiwis.

What's veggie got to do with anything? It's yeast extract!

@IPJ, Aussies traditionally pick vegemite while kiwis seem to pick marmite, there are exceptions though. Its because the marmite was made in NZ, while the vegemite was imported from aussie, not sure if it still is like that though.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

"Marmite is approved by the Vegetarian Society. During the brewing process, some brewers add isinglass (extracted from the swim bladder of some poor Sturgeon) to help clarify their beer. However, the yeast extract is removed before the finings are added, so yes it is vegetarian."

hazzah! so it is...was it always? I may be confusing it with Bovril...

must add Marmite to my shopping list then...lots of years to make up for...

I can't believe ther's even a debate on this topic. Clearly VEGEMITE is a superior spread - one of the best food staples in the world, I would have to say (and my Albanian bf, a recent convert to vegemitism, TOTALLY agrees, hehe).

Never tried vegemite tho...

Pomeroy & Winterbottom do Marmite in all your favourite jar sizes.. Just make sure you hand over your EC card without looking at the numbers if you get a 500g jar...

mmmm 500g of marmite. *OMP* *OMP*

I may be confusing it with Bovril

I think you were. It comes in the same shaped jars too.

Cheese and marmite sandwiches: strangely enough I only discovered these recently although I've been eating both separately for decades. Yumm. Anything with marmite previously seemed odd, although a thin film of butter was necessary to prevent too much of the brown stuff soaking into the bread.

can't handle either ...did some of my school years in burton on trent where the marmite factory is located ...in the 80s, it used to be britain's 2nd smelliest town after grimsby (fish factory place for those who don't know it) ...burton used to waft of beer hops, the pirelli tyre factory and marmite ...marmite was by far the worst smell out of that and from the outside the factory looked like a bomb had hit it ...it was sort of like a weird burning smell ...as school kids we used to say that they were making artificial faeces as that was the reason for the grim smell and what the end product looks like :D
