2010 World Cup (football/soccer)

yeah, tho I doubt they will give it to Schweinsteiger if this is the way they are going.

I mean, Robben missed the start of the tournament and has done nothing of his class apart from a goal against Slovakia. Messi was underwhelming, above average but not outstanding. Xavi and Iniesta have just got it because Spain have got to the final, and didn't really stand out. It looks like they went for big names, rather than less famous but more genuine additions to the tournament, the ones who were simply better and more exciting performers. Honda and KP Boateng were brilliant I thought, really livened up the world cup.

You can even see it with the nomination of Gyan, who is to me more of a token gesture given to the African team who got to the quarters. He did decent IMO and scored the goals but Boateng was very good in midfield I thought, very skillful and influential.

I think it's dissapointing and a shame.

What letter does socialism start with? 'S'. What letter does Satan start with? 'S'. What letter does sodomy start with? 'S'. What letter does soccer start with? 'S'. I'm going to give you a great big guess on this... It's 'S'. Do you think this is some kind of coincidence or something? Do you really honestly think that because it ain't. It ain't at all. Soccer is against God.

Holy fucking hell, that guy is fucked up. Doesn't he know 'soccer' players don't need hands because they have the hand of god on their side.

@DanielF: Yeah I agree that Kevin Prince Boateng should've been nominated...he was great...but yeah it's sad that it often turns to nominating the token players that people would remember.

You know you've just witnessed some great satire when 98% of the interwebs think it's anything but.

@ShaggyMame: the parakeet also predicted (correctly) a German win tonight...Now it's going to be a battle of the century: Octopus vs. Parakeet.

And while on the subject of psychic animals...

oh...my...god.

"Spanish businessmen have offered 30,000 euros (about 38,000 dollars) to buy the world-famous “psychic” octopus Paul for use as a mascot at a gastronomic event, media reports said on Saturday."

Yep with the right marketing etc. Paul is worth millions hey but you being a USian should understand that more than anyone around this Town. Have you had your break today!

I bet the Germans wish they had had that psychic octopus in 1939.

Has anyone ever wondered why if it is, in fact, the " World Cup ", the trophy is not still a " cup " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy#FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy any more?

At least my Canadian friends can still drink out of theirs! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_cup

P.S. There is probably a good historical explation as to why a 1939 German octopus would not have been quite as popular as Paul. http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/churchill/images/wc0213s.jpg

Diego Forlán deservedly wins the Golden Ball

And the mighty Thomas Müller wins the Golden Boot and Best Young Player!!

p.s. thank jeebus the most disappointing world cup in recent memory is over (at least a terribly disappointing group stage anyway)...I believe this tournament had even less goals scored than Germany 2006 where there around 150 goals scored, compared to the 145 this time around...

p.p.s. Kudos to Argentina and Germany for playing the most exciting and beautiful-to-watch football of the tournament.

So Jimmy Jump did manage to put a 'barretina' on the cup before getting punched and carried out. He's now accused of trying to steal the thing. Hilarious.
