If money is no object, I'd recommend a high-quality Williams pear schnapps (clear, 40%).

If you're just looking for a fun souvenir that's uniquely and unambiguously German, go for Küstennebel.

I think William's is from Tirol..from Germany's Black Forest there are some great Kirschwasser Schnapps

Williams Birnenschnaps you get in the Black Forest region as well and slo in Alsace. As well as all sorts of other Obstbraende (Schnaps made from fruits)

Blasphemy! Willi is distilled at your doorstep around Bad Feilnbach, Bad Aibling etc. along with plum and cherry Schnaps.

Enzianschnaps is good stuff, made from the root of the - yellow, not blue! - plant.

Or Danziger Goldwasser with bits of gold (additive E175) floating in the liquor.

Danziger Goldwasser (German: Gold water of Danzig), in Polish: Gdańska wódka (vodka of Gdańsk), with Goldwasser as the registered tradename, is a strong (40% ABV) root and herbal liqueur which has been produced since at least 1598 in Danzig (Gdańsk). The town, which had been a part of the Hanseatic League, was for many centuries inhabited by Germans and, later, Poles. It was made part of Poland in 1945 after several wars and land partitions. Please see in details the History of Danzig. The mixed ethnical character of Danzig is the reason why both, Germans and Poles, consider Danziger Goldwasser, or Gdańska wódka, to be a traditional domestic distilled beverage.

Did you know that the William's Birne (pear) actually comes from England - weird huh?

The Williams pear is thought to date from 1765 to 1770 from the yard of an Aldermaston, England schoolmaster named Mr. Stair or Mr. Wheeler, giving rise to the now-obscure synonyms Aldermaston pear and Stairs pear. A nurseryman named Williams later acquired the variety, and after introducing it to the rest of England, the pear became known as the Williams Pear.[1] However, the pear's full name is Williams' Bon Chretien, or "Williams' good Christian."

I believe 'Willi' is distilled all over germany, certainly as far north as here, Jork, near Hamburg.

Der milde Willi

However if you can carry beer and not schnaps, this is, in my opinion, the most original stuff I have ever tasted.

Rauchbier

(and not soooo far from most of you guys for a day trip...)

Swiss, I believe. From Valais.

They certainly had the idea of letting a pear grow in a bottle by sticking it over the pear buds.

No no - You are all wrong!! The best memorable liquor out of Germany is Ratzeputz - a really tasty "Damen-likör" - Once tasted you will never forget it..

Other countries also make schnapps with fruit inside from putting the bottle on the growing fruit. Hungarian palinka, for instance:

or Romanian ţuică

Sorry for crap paste job. Forgot to quote before posting.
