Posted 31 Mar 2009 Hi I will be going "Up the Isar" (from Munich to no further than the airport) for a half day trip on each of the next couple of weekends (April 4-5, April 11-12) to give the mountain bike a run out. It seems nice going along the river bank. If you fancy coming along, let me know. Also, if you know any decent places to stop for beer etc then that would be appreciated tooCheersstu Link to current thread
Posted 31 Mar 2009 What's the surface like? I have a Specialized Globe with 35mm (width) rims. The tires are street tires, (not slicks) although they handle fine on packed gravel/cinder type paths.
Posted 31 Mar 2009 It's about 40 km to Freising through the English Gardens and along the Isar (either bank), you can then get the train back from here. Street tires should be OK, just let a bit of air out to get more suspension.
Posted 31 Mar 2009 Cool, sounds like a plan. I have to fit this around apartment hunting over Easter weekend (I won't be in town this coming weekend), what day/time are you talking about?
Posted 31 Mar 2009 If it's not hardcore biking i.e. along bikepath on the Isar (since I have only a "city" bike), I would come along I've done Munich to Halbergmoos (?) and back, ON the bike: easy-pea :)
Posted 1 Apr 2009 Did we decide upon a date and time for Easter weekend?
Posted 2 Apr 2009 I'd be interested as long as it's not on the 12th of April (singing a Mass for Easter). I also have a street bike and hope it'll be ok...but this sounds like fun!
Posted 2 Apr 2009 I've cycled up the Isar as far as Neufahrn and it is ok on street tyres though there are a few parts where it is not ideal.
Posted 2 Apr 2009 Hi, How about Friday 10th? We can then build up a thirst for the Beer garden night out. Meet 10am at/on the Mariannenbrücke bridge (between Mariannenplatz (i.e. Tram 17) and the Alpines Museum). This is about 400 north of the Deutsche museum. Let me know if any of you have a better idea as I am quite new to the area I will be going out from noon this Sunday (April 5th) for a couple of hours along the river (mainly to cycle without traffic). I will leave from outside Zoozie’z, Wittelsbacherstrasse 15 (Baldeplatz). Look it up on Google or the MVV Website. It is on the other side of bridge from Kolumbusplatz. If you wanna come along, just turn up a few minutes beforehand. All welcome
Posted 2 Apr 2009 I'm also new. So new in fact, that I'm not even there yet, I'm arriving this Sunday just before midnight, hopefully my bicycle will be there by the following weekend, although considering that I'm still arranging shipping (Who knew that shipping a bicycle was such a freaking nightmare ?), I might end up buying one there. Your suggestion about Mariannenbrücke bridge is good though, it looks like as convenient a place to fall into the Isar as any! I hope to join you at 10:00 on Friday morning. If I don't show up, it'll be for one of two reasons: I've got no bike or I'm apartment viewing. In either case, I hope you have fun without me.
Posted 2 Apr 2009 I was there last week, it was great. Went all the way to Garching and returned by U-Bahn. Most of it is paved, some parts further north are a little wilder, but it is still fairly wide and flat, not full of roots or stones or anything.
Posted 2 Apr 2009 I finally managed to find a courier for my bike. You may be surprised how difficult this is. There are all kinds of weird rules, that appear to be easily misinterpreted, about package size and weight. Anyway £55.00 later, my bike should be shipping tomorrow. Since I don't arrive till Sunday evening, it might just get there before me! I hope to see you next Friday morning.
Posted 3 Apr 2009 You can take your bike on the plane as outsized luggage... make sure to deflate the tires or the lack of air pressure will cause them to burst, and wrap it in film (usually airports have people somewhere to provide this service)
Posted 3 Apr 2009 It's shipped; it left my house this afternoon. I did look at the luggage option on my flight, but the baggage excess charge was equal (or more) than the cost of parcel shipping. Combined with the inconvenience of having to move it around between my house and the airport, and the airport and the hotel, I opted for the courier. I look forward to our reunion! See you Friday.
Posted 4 Apr 2009 Isn't that direction "Down the Isar"?

Which direction are you going? If you're heading north, I could meet you at somepoint on the river. Let me know. :)
Posted 7 Apr 2009 My bicycle arrived and has been re-assembled (I sure hope I got the head-stock put together correctly). I haven't been out on it yet, too much other stuff to do. Fridays ride may well be my first outing on it in Munich. I am hoping to stop by the bike shop at Paradiesstr. (between Emil-Riedel Str. and Englischer Garten) Friday morning I'd like a better tool kit. They don't have a sign indicating that they be open or closed, so I am hoping they'll be open.
Posted 7 Apr 2009 you do realise that Friday is a public holiday, ey? No shops will be open (or on monday 13th)
Posted 7 Apr 2009 Yes, I did hear something about Easter weekend, in fact, that's how I'm able to go cycling on a Friday when I'd normally be at work. But, not ALL businesses are closed over the weekend, and it wouldn't surprise me to see a bike shop near the park open on Friday.
Posted 7 Apr 2009 the only businesses open on a public holiday (except in stations and airports) will be restaurants, cafés, petrol stations and possibly souvenir shops. But feel free to make a wasted journey if you insist that it might be open. Me, I'd go on saturday when it is business as usual.
