Improving your Firefox web browser

I have reverted back to Safari on my Mac. Firefox is OK but it doesn't recognise the mouse wheel as a button (I have to have middle button click on link opening the link in a new tab) and I haven't found out how to switch between tabs via the keyboard (with safari CMD-Shift- L/R arrow).

On firefox its easy, use CTRL and PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN. This swaps between the open tabs.

v1.0.1 critical update available...

Does this mean the hackers are targetting firefox users too? or just a normal software update made out to be essential?

The smiley faces extensions do not work anymore. I've got a new computer, and have now installed firefox, and the UPDATE, configured it as per this thread, and now I cannot download the smiley's extension ahh... no more happy faces for me !

Got a problem:

If I try and open The Gelbe Seiten Webpage Firefox dies and closes all tabs. This, as I'm sure you can imagine, is total arse.

Does this happen to any other, otherwise satisfied Firefox users?

How can I fix it? Do I need a patch / a download /a double whisky?

I'm grateful for help and whisky

Just tried it on the windows version of firefox, took ages though cos its a sucky site that uses java!

You can probably fix it by turning off java in the "Web Features" preferences.

Never found a use for java myself, ever since the animated gif replaced it... (Right now I have to restart my machine to free up the memory java chewed up)

There's a simple and neat Firefox optimiser which can be downloaded here for free. It simply asks you about speed of PC and line, and optimises Firefox accordingly. I've not inspected it too closely, but for me, ot certainly does what it says on the packet... Pages seem to load MUCH faster, especially this with pictures...

hmmm just installed firefox instead of updating my mozilla. To be honest I dont like it. Its just like a dumbed down version of the mozilla browser.

Ok its better than IE, but I aint sure yet

I tried the Firefox browser some months ago and was back to Mozilla within the week. To many bugs and the it felt like I needed a plugin with every page that I opened. It also crashed alot. Firefox seems to be reinventing the Mozilla wheel and they haven't gotten much past the squared shape.

@yorkshirelad

just used it and it certainly loads the pages faster.

thanks for the link

the point of firefox is that its open source allowing some wonderful addins, something that should be encouraged. the problems ive had with it are more to do with those annoying recalcitrant website designers who design only with internet explorer in mind.

I've also installed Google Accelerator - this speeds up browsing by a mix of caching, pre-fetching and subtle use of Googles own proxies. In the last 3 days it "claims" to have saved me 58 minutes of browser waiting which I feel is quite significant...

It works with Internet Explorer too...

Having tested the Google Accelerator, i can't say i am impressed... i saved 6 minutes in a week. Certainly get and use FireTune.

On another note, for those speed freaks, hitting the backspace key acts as the back button on your browser. I know it's a really simple thing, but i have been looking for a keystroke for this for ages. If you do a lot of 'backing' in your browser, this will save a second at least per click...

And i reckon that will earn me more than 6 minutes in a week ;)

edit: works in IE too

Just noticed, Version 1.5 Beta 1 is available for Firefox and Thunderbird.

Just installed both and there are a few minor differences but installed fine with no problems.

I ran Deer Park 1 for a while (which was the Alpha 1 on this Beta) and it was a disaster, so I removed it want went back to FF 1.0.4.

Let's see if this is better... downloading now...
