Improving your Firefox web browser

159 posts in this topic

The pipelining suggestions have caused me a problem with online banking sites like the ING-Deba site. I have been having no probs until I made the changes suggested here and then I get a "your browser does not support 128-bit encryption" message when trying to log on to some SSL sites. Firefox supports 256-bit encryption so there's something amiss somewhere.

I asked at the Firefox Forum and they suggested setting the pipeling changes back to default and it worked again.

Well I have just tried my on-line banking with both Deutsche Bank and Barclays Bank and both work fine after making the changes. But I have not done anything else yet with Firefox, other than make these changes and download some themes.

I see in the forum you mention some extensions, maybe this was causing the problem ?

yes, the funny thing was, I could access the online section of Sparda Bank but just not ING-Deba. Odd. The extension was the one Yorkshire Lad6 suggested: ChromEdit so that you can add text to block google ads. I've left that as it is and just altered the two pipelining configurations. Seems to be fine now.

I use Safari (mac) is Firefox supposed to be superior to Safari as well? I didn't much like IE, too slow, so I started using Safari but if Firefox is even better, maybe I'll switch to that.

Of course that pretty much limits the people who can respond since Mac users are a rare breed.

I use macs amongst others, and I don't think there's much difference between Safari and Firefox. This is purely from a users point of view. I don't know much about technical issues such as security or pipelines or proxys or whatever. Firefox does have the advantage of the extensions. I don'T think Safari has that. Plus Firefox just looks better. And it loads quicker.

Firefox works very well on mac and is my preferred browser over safari. However with the imminant launch of Tiger (10.4) you might want to wait and try Safari 2.0... it's rumoured to be a massive improvement.

Microsoft declared they weren't bothering with IE for mac anymore cos they couldn't handle the competition Safari offered.. so delete it! Like you said, it's crap anyway.

I have been using tiger (10.4) for a while (we get the beta versions at college) and I can't say I noticed any major improvements in Safari. However, opinions in the department differ. My nearest collegue thinks Safari is the dogs wotsits and won't listen to my blatherings about FF. Different folks...

I dunno, I've found Firefox to load slower on both XP and 98 (my computer and my gf's computer respectively) ...we normally don't agree on programs very often...but this we agree on, we can't stand firefox...

deleted it last fall, everything is faster now...odd...hmm...lol

I never fell using Firefox. Maybe deleting it caused the fall?

Early (pre-release) versions were slow becasuse of the debugging code embedded in them. I've little doubt that the final (current) release of Firefox is MUCH faster than IE out of the box, and even faster when some of the tuning tips are applied...

Well I use firefox, and would never go back, and it is super faster, particularly after the changes.

I will try the maxthon browser tomorrow at work. I had thought FF was better than Mozilla, but after a couple of days, I am not so sure.

I've had some trouble with Firefox, but still like it better the IE. Let's see if these changes really help speed things up.

I'm wondering what the best choice is for these smilies now. Should I choose Insert Forum code, HTML, or image location? http://img116.exs.cx/img116/934/z0tdntknw.gif

(this is forum code option - let's see how it looks)

The Brauneck's live webcam (12.00 to 13.00 daily here) uses ActiveX controls, therefore easier to blow the dust off Internet Exploiter and use that.

HELP !!

OK, using firefox through a proxy server, I cannot resolve non fqdn's. i.e. WINS names. What exception do I need to put in the proxy server settings to bypass a non fqdn ? I tried the server name, but that just does not work !

BLOODY IE works, although looking at this, it really should not ! as this is not in my exception list.
