Posted 10 Sep 2008 Munich is a great place for cycling tours, either within the city itself with a Biergarten stop or outside of town in the Bavarian countryside. One tour is normally planned each weekend by a dedicated team during a season which starts mid-March and ends with the first snows of December. This is social cycling, not a sport. A tour will usually be between 45-60km, during which we ride for an hour (around 15km) then stop for a rest in a Biergarten or Gasthof. Then we ride on, stopping a total of three times. During the year we visit many corners of Munich and Bavaria, and there are some longer tours. We try our best to ensure the rides are interesting and stay as far from busy roads as possible. What you must always bring: warm clothes, sunglasses, water, raingear, sufficient cash, bike, lights. Bike: Our rides are usually on quiet roads and gravel tracks. Mountain/hybrid bikes are suitable, but good cyclists can and do sometimes use road bikes. No skinny tires. The bike must have both brakes working and the gears and tires must be in good condition. You also need to know how to actually ride the bike. Who can come: nearly anyone who can manage about 18km per hour. What else? Things don't always work out as planned. Weather, trains, and conditions can change without notice, so a resilient sense of humour is always required. This is a meeting of friends organized by unpaid volunteers so you remain responsible for your own safety.
