Meetup for those staying in Berlin for Christmas

29 posts in this topic

So due to having no more vacation days for work, I am forced to stay in Berlin for Christmas. Which is not a bad thing because I really enjoy the Weihnachtmärtke scene and all the family/friend atmosphere. But I was just wondering if there is anybody else that is not going home for Christmas. I want to actually cook Christmas dinner, but for only my boyfriend and I, it doesn't seem worth the effort.

So if anyone is staying in Berlin and is up for an orphans-potluck-type-Christmas dinner, feel free to respond.

Lovely idea and thank you.

Was intending to go to the UK, but for rather sad family reasons I've had to visit twice in the last couple of months at short notice - can't really do it again. Be great to have some company. Free guided tour of Berlin as a "thank you" - extended to all potluckers!

OK, as far as the guided tour is concerned, it'll take place on the 26th. Meet up somewhere central around 1:30 pm/2:00 pm and take a wander to look at some of the major historical sights. I'll also bring some pictures I took in the 1980s when the Wall was in place to contrast "then" and "now".

When daylights fails, back to mine in Friedenau for rich English fruit cake (plus mince pies if I can get any), butterscotch shortbread, Scottish ginger shortbread, Stollen, Duchy Original orange biscuits... and there's a selection of whiskies including Glenfiddich Single Malt and Special Reserve, Glenlivet 18 year old Malt, Irish whisky...and more goodies besides. There'll also be tea, coffee and soft drinks.

Cheers,

Keefy

Update - mince pies sold out. :( However, I bought a jar of mincemeat [for non-Brits, Christmas Mincemeat contains no meat - it's a kind of dried fruit jam/jelly] and I can chop up some apples, add mincemeat and a crumble top, bake same and serve with cream.

Wine and beer will also be available.

OK, meeting point and time for the free walk on 26/12.

Brandenburg Gate by the Tourist Information Point at 13:45. My Toytown profile picture is a reasonable representation of what I look like :) I'll also be wearing a Berlin guide badge. Walk should finish around 16:00 when it starts to get dark.

For those coming to mine for drinks/coffee/cakes, I hope to finish the walk in the Nikolaiviertel from where there is a direct bus service (takes about 30 mins) to "Schloss Keefy" in Friedenau. For getting back, I'm about 5 mins walk from S and U-Bf Innsbrucker Platz (U4 and the S-Bahn Ring). There are also buses M48 and M85 (to Alexanderplatz and Hauptbahnhof respectively) plus bus 187 to U-Bf Turmstraße. Southbound, the M85 goes to Lichterfelde-Süd via Steglitz, the M48 to Zehlendorf via Steglitz and the 187 to Lankwitz. I'm also close to Friedenau station on the north-south S-Bahn (S1).

Any more takers? Still free places! Also, if you don't fancy the walk but do fancy drinks/cakes, let me know!

OK, all systems "go" for the walk - details above.

As it seems there are all sorts of difficulties (or no feedback) for people coming back to mine after the walk, we'll simply finish at 16:00 and then go our separate ways. I have a Plan "B" for me

OK - weather forecast for the walk on the 26th is good - cold but sunny (according to Der Tagesspeigel).

Bring your woollies - and walk off some of that rich food you'll have eaten by then!

Cheers,

Keefy :)
