How long does customs take to process a package?

7 posts in this topic

I had a package shipped from the U.S. last Friday and was fully prepared to wait a week or two or three for it.

Last night I checked the status not really expecting anything and imagine my surprise when I saw that the package had already arrived in Germany. The status now says "Status: Into Foreign Customs. Your item is being processed by customs in GERMANY."

The declaration states "Personal/Household goods (Relocation)" and the package contains 40 used/opened DVDs (I left them with Dad thinking I wouldn't need them because of region coding but realized that I could use my laptop as a DVD player and hook it up to the TV). Since I've been living here under 6 months and the contents of the package are non-controversial, how long should I expect to wait for customs to process it?

Thanks in advance!

Going by my own experiences while receiving audio books by mail in Germany, you can safely expect another 2-4 weeks before they are delivered. Sorry for sounding so pessimistic, but they probably have some officious bureaucrat who insists on going through the contents of each of those CD/DVDs, checking for copyright infringement, kiddie porn, terrorist propaganda and God knows what! (and probably gets paid for it.)

Bummer! I had a sneaking suspicion that might be the case but was in hopeful denial. I should have known it was too good to be true.

last time I had something which was processed by German customs it only took a day or so before I got a note in the postbox to go to the Zollamt (Customs) in Heidelberg and pick it up.

Hi,

It depends on the contents.

If they feel that you have imported some good from a different country then they might ask for a proof of purchase and things like this.

The best thing would be to call the Courier (Fedex, DHL or whoever it is in your case) and ask for the reason why your package is being held. Alternativel you can ask them to give the contact info of the customs dept. or you can call Custom dept at Munich airport and ask for the person incharge. They will guide you better.
