Top ten favourite songs of all time

I agree entirely. For all my favourite songs there is more than just the song. There is a story behind every one.

I do have a theory that almost all everybodies favourite music comes from their formative years (16-24?) or a period of extreme emotional stress.

Agree, agree esp about the extreme emotional stress theory. Those are the times when songs seem to speak to me and I identify with them more. Seems to happen once or twice a year, so I have built up my song catalogue from there .

Not my most favorite songs, but the stuff I "danced" to, when I was in my early twenties. In fact I cant even listen to some of it anymore.

Oh, and I chose the least-gayest I could remember (although I have my doubts about The The). ;)

Héroes del Silencio-Entre dos tierras

Bloodhound Gang - Fire Water Burn

Die Ärzte - Schrei nach Liebe

Megavier - genug ist genug

The The - Dogs of Lust

With the standard 'this is a completely artificial exercise, and the answer depends on which way the wind is blowing' disclaimer, here are ten song that I love. I think the fact that they're all a good few years old means I've got old...

Lazy Line Painter Jane - Belle & Sebastian

Pull The Wires From The Wall - The Delgados

Anthrax - Gang Of Four

A Country Practice - Half Man Half Biscuit

Atmosphere - Joy Division

Mogwai Fear Satan - Mogwai

The Dirge - New Bad Things

Another Girl, Another Planet - The Only Ones

Map Ref. 41°N 93°W - Wire

You Can Have It All - Yo La Tengo

House Of Love - Feel / My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realise

You are right. "Feel", with its trippy guitar riffs and glowing harmonies was amongst there best, but I think that "Destroy the heart" is a contender. This is probably more on a lyrical level. As for "that" My Bloody Valentine song, apparently gig-goers at their recent shows were treated to a 20 minute-strong screaming rendition, which was probably worth the 16 year sabbatical in itself. From that EP though, I pick "Thorn" as the best track, although it has to be said that I am a sucker for a route #1 Indiepop song.

Grant Lee Buffalo- Jupiter and Teardrop

Quite wonderful song that. Love his voice and that's a cracking album.

Your Love is the Place Where I Come From - Teenage Fanclub

Jonathan David - Belle & Sebastian

Communication - The Cardigans

Message to my Girl - Split Enz

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - Crosby, Stills & Nash

Steal My Kisses - Ben Harper

Betterman - John Butler Trio

The Day Before you Came - ABBA

All Aboard - The Datsuns

Shocked - Kylie (but that could change daily, but Kyles has to be in there)

That was pretty difficult, but will have to do, the top 5 is pretty constant in any case.
