  1. What will my US car need for TÜV?

Well, yeah, that’s true. I’m in Munich and I do take trips in lower Bavaria, so I need winter tires.
  2. What will my US car need for TÜV?

It’s a 2011 car. Do yourself a favor and sell it and buy here. TUeV will have a field day with it.    I’m going to guess that TUeV will require like 2000 (possibly more) in repairs. The big thing is the exhaust system and emissions. This is just a guess remember. Then you will have to probably pay more in tax because it is a big car. You will also need winter and summer tires. Plus shipping and customs.
  3. American-German Dual Citizenship for Child

I am not a lawyer, so I can’t give any legal advice. I have heard about choosing when they are 18, though. I have no experience with it. This wiki has a bit about it, I think: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jus_sanguinis. It is wiki, though, so it isn’t legal advice. You can look for a lawyer here: https://anwaltauskunft.de/magazin#ls-extended   That being said, think about where you plan to live in the future because the children will have to file a US tax return if they are a citizen. You may also need the tax reduction for your US taxes.
  4. English-speaking driving schools in Munich

Just take the test in manual and make your life easier.
  5.   LOL. Can you imagine how long it would take them to get Oyster card style booths???    I see you are in Munich and Sendlinger Tor Ubahn and above has taken years….. Marienplatz took a long time as well.
  6. Coronavirus

I have been asked for proof. It was the day after my second vax (Monday) and it was a last minute thing to just grab some Thai food at Sendlinger Tor. I wasn’t sure of the rules as it had all changed, but I thought I can sit outside. She said sure, but then I wanted a glass of wine with my lunch and she said she didn’t have any glasses (?), so I said no thank you. The whole point was to have a relaxing lunch with a glass of wine.   But they are checking. I have one more week to go and I’m fine with it.
  7. They are 14,60 now. I just looked at mine and it has the date up top now. Previous years had the upper spot bigger. They almost never examine the whole card. Show them the stamp and it’s folded over and they can’t see the top. I don’t think I have used an out of date card, though.
  8. The first time I had student housing and stayed with a friend for one night. The other time the job had an apartment. Isn’t the job offering you something?
  9.   If it’s really old, the Streifenkart will look different with regards to amount of space between the part you stamp and the top. But since it’s folded over, they probably won’t notice.    It’s easy to spot the inspectors.
  10. Separation: can I send my kid to two kindergardens?

If you are separating, please see a lawyer. They will the agreement in place with how much money he has to give you for your child and for you (I assume he makes more money). You are entitled to get separation payments from him. It doesn’t sound like he will be giving you any of that? Also you need to get moving on the separation paperwork because your separation date is the date to start getting your money and if 6 months go by, you do NOT get back payments.    You can work part time on Hartz 4. The limit right now is 446 for living. Rent and Nebenkosten are separate from that. Those regulations came about from the pandemic. I think the highest a single person can get is about 1200? This will also cover your health insurance and Rentenversicherung. You can also get help with a social worker and Sozial Wohnungen.    I highly suggest you concentrate on getting a lawyer for your separation payments and looking into Hartz 4 or Wohnungsgeld to further help you. I would worry about the kindergarten issue later.
  11. Work: IT company vs. university (teaching)

Well, I saw upthread it wouldn’t be a catastrophe since you said you can retire. Some VHSes are hard to get into a nice teaching setup and some are easy. I got a lot of work in Frankfurt VHS and not so much in Munich, but I also had different circumstances. You can also do Lehraufträge since you said that about retirement. You just need to organise a freelance visa, but that’s a pain with health insurance and taxes.    And you’re right, they all sued and now it has made things very difficult for others in academia. You can google Lehraufträge and Hartz 4 and you will see it is a problem. They can’t get contracts. The government doesn’t know what to do with these people.    I don’t have the blue card. I have the Daueraufenhalts-EU (I’m not really sure what the difference is). Thank God I got that because I separated from my exH right when my contract ended. It was an absolute nightmare.    But I have recently secured a contract with a private Hochschule. Not 100%, but it will go up next year. That’s unbefristet.    One more thing to consider: which city? Munich is so expensive for rent.
  12. Work: IT company vs. university (teaching)

Some things to consider with a two-year contract, is that there is usually a time limit you have to wait to get another befristet contract. In Bavaria, it used to be a three-year wait, now you can never get another two-year contract! The only contract you are eligible for is a permanent contract (good luck with that!). This is for public universities. Sometimes they work out new befristet contracts with a “Projekt” and then it is acceptable.    Private universities are different.    You can also move states and there is no limit or go for a federal job.    This isn’t something to be taken lightly. You can get Arbeitslosengeld 1 for about a year after the contract ends and hope and pray you find something in that time. Also it depends on your visa status (I have unbefristet). If you have unbefristet status, you can then go the freelance route teaching and on ALG 2 (this is not fun).    Academia is extremely competitive for jobs. Think about what you will do when that contract of two years runs out and which state it is.
  13. Happy To Help in Münich

    Email sent!
  14. What are you cooking today?

I made ginger chicken meatballs in a ginger coconut broth and spinach.
  15. This might help you since you are not a member of the Mieterverein:   https://frankfurt.de/themen/planen-bauen-und-wohnen/wohnen/mietrechtliche-beratung/mietrechtliche-beratung
  16.   I am not sure. I am not a lawyer. All I know is the account that you share for the Kaution protects you. I know you said you weren’t a member of the Mieterverein, but I suggest you go to them for advice or the local Beratungsstelle in Frankfurt. I had a similar problem in Frankfurt and the Mieterverein helped me get my Kaution back. I was a member, though.
  17. Also your Kaution should be in an account that has your name on it as well. It isn’t the landlord’s responsibility to put it into a second account.
  18. Switching electricity contract

It’s best to look at your contract. Usually it is a 3 month cancellation time. I’d call up the new supplier and see what they say, and then refer to your current contract. You will probably need to organise this with your local Stadtwerk, but I’m not sure.
  19. Hi, am calling from Microsoft. Your PC is infected

Ha! I said the F word and then he went in saying I was a crazy lady…
  20. Hi, am calling from Microsoft. Your PC is infected

So sorry to hear about your cat, Bramble.    I got one of those calls today. I said I don’t have a computer. Then he tried to gaslight me saying I am crazy and that’s impossible. I snapped and hung up.    My computer hasn’t been on in weeks and I only use a tablet or phone. So annoying.
  21. Coronavirus

Yeah, that’s true (asymptomatic cases). I personally think it has gone beyond the point of control there. To be clear, I don’t know what the answer is, really. It’s a shame because it could have been handled a lot better.
  22. Coronavirus

Those cane toads as an invasive species really did a number on the Australians…    But seriously, I can’t believe how strong of a lockdown they have for so few cases. I mean I get it, and they can maybe stop it, but I personally think it is too late.
  23. Coronavirus

Australia has always been pretty strict about quarantine. I do think Australians are going to lose it soon. To leave their country and get in has been really difficult and expensive during this crisis. ScoMo really screwed up. He was my local MP when I lived there.
  24. What are you cooking today?

I made Asian turkey meatballs, but with chicken. Made a big batch and froze some. So good and a diet recipe. For some reason my local Lidl has a regular supply of chicken and turkey mince.    https://www.skinnytaste.com/asian-turkey-meatballs-with-lime-sesame/   I also made Greek chicken burgers. Just mixed the mince with frozen spinach, feta, garlic, an egg, and breadcrumbs. Made 6 patties from 600g of meat.
  25.   Sorry to go off-topic. Last one.    I have no clue how I do it. I don’t even like cigarettes very much. I just have a habit of only smoking at night and a cigarette before bed. I don’t like to smoke much in summer. Been doing this on and off for 20 years.    Back on topic and sorry!
