  1. I was very shocked and saddened to hear this news. After losing my own partner to suicide 9 months ago I can fully appreciate what his family must be going through and on top of this tragedy his wife must still be trying to come to terms with this loss of their daughter. She will need a hell of a lot of support over the coming months - I have been lucky enough to have it which has been a great comfort.

  2. Hi legal alien,

sorry - if I had read your post properly I would have seen that you had already been to the Badesee!!

I used to live in Bickenbach - 5 years in the Hartenauerstr. Still pop back there now and again to the Italian which isn't bad! Never made it to the lake though!

  3. Hi legal alien,

have you checked out the Badesee in Bensheim too? It is great for kids - the only slight downside is that you get some noise from the A5!! I was there with my sister and family a couple of months back when they came to visit and her kids (5 and 2) loved it. It might be a bit late for this year though!

  4. I have lived in Bensheim for 2 years now and feel very settled there. Work brought me here initially and I now own a house here. It really depends what you want - if you are looking for somewhere to bring up kids etc. then it is great. If you want to be making the most of the expat social scene then it is a little too far away from Frankfurt and/or Heidelberg - I have tried to combine the two and it isn't easy! (I end up staying with friends in Frankfurt a lot at weekends as the last train back is too early (around midnight) and I don't always want to drive. I have however been threatening to organise a Bensheim curry night for a while which I will now do in the next few weeks! (I already have interest from expat friends in Darmstadt and Frankfurt).

Why don't you fly over for a weekend prior to moving, hire a car and check out a few of these places yourselves?

If you have any specific questions please feel free to PM me :-)

  5. It was a good night thanks - although we should have started a bit later as most people didn´t come along until around 8pm. Good atmosphere and I also enjoyed the food - maybe you can make it to the next dining club event ? Sign up if you haven´t done already to get details by email once we circulate.

  6. Many of you are already members of the Frankfurt Dining Club but I wanted to let non members and newbies also know that we are having an open event at Waxys Irish Bar on the 2nd Feb from 17.00 onwards - full details are on the website - get signed up !

I say "open event" as for those of you unfamiliar with the club we normally meet at different restaurants every month and numbers are therefore restricted. On this occasion however we want to try and get as many Expats together as possible for a few drinks and the chance to catch up with old friends and to make some new ones.

Hope lots of you can join us !

  7. Unfortunately the job fell through at the last moment (which I am fairly fed up about to be quite honest). I think the moral of the story in this case is don´t make plans on the back of verbal job offers, wait till they have been confirmed in writing. Hope you manage to find some other Expats in Giessen area.

  8. Hi Sarah,

I might be starting a job with a company in the Giessen area although it is still not 100% certain. If I do I will be in the area at least a couple of nights every week and would certainly be up for a beer. I will be in touch should job now go ahead.
