  1. Dear all,

Our moving van will be coming next week, I already called the people from the Nuremberg Amt and they told me that I have to hire a company to put the signs. The lady suggested me: Menger, Han and Schötz... but I can not find them online (I found one Schötz but it is in Dachau?)... do all the other companies that appear online can be used on Nuremberg?

    Thanks a lot!,

Hi, some time has passed since the message you quoted, so some things are a bit different now, but I still can't answer all the questions.   The refugee crisis happened, so nowadays there is an integration class for kids who do not speak any German at all, so if the kid is going to first class it can be put in the integration class.  Depending on the age it might be better to spend one year in a kindergarten instead.     And I've seen as well kids coming to Germany with very little German or no German who start in class 2, 3 or 4 in Charles Dickens, it is tough for them but they manage, at least from what I've seen.

I have no idea how to handle the thing that you will move here during the winter, most probably you should contact the school and ask them directly.

Yes, I will contact the school once my husband gets an answer. Thanks a lot!

I have my first kid in CD, in general I think it is a very good primary school and for now we are satisfied with it.   They try to balance English/German kids in every class and as far as I know there are no problems of "not enough English kids.   Maybe they had that problem many years ago, because it used to be not the first choice for English speaking families because it is not a hip school and because it is not really meant for kids who do not speak German at all.    Our daughter class has 11 English speaking kids and 13 German speaking kids, the unbalance is because they have to keep 2 places for people who move into the city last minute and they can be assigned to any side.

The school becomes very difficult by grade 5 so be prepared to work hard and you have to know that in the German schooling system the parents support is a big piece of the puzzle.

About going to Gymnasium, of course not every kid will make it, that's not the schools fault, not every kid is an academic kid.  But the choice for the kids who do not make is going to Usinov, which is a pretty good school as well and nowadays you can even do the Abitur there as well.   I can understand that NMS sounds easier because you settle the school problem completely, but I do not see major issues going the CD way.

Another important thing, is CD does not have that "English" feeling other English schools have, most kids speak German among themselves, but there is a parents association club (you are expected to support it $$$) which hires English speaking tutors who organize cool extra activities all in English and done during school hours but after the real classes.

The only issue we had in the school was that our kid does not join the religious class, so she was supposed to join the humanistics class but the teacher quit the school the second month and it was not replaced because funny enough there are not enough teachers in Berlin for that.  She taught half of the school so half of the kids who were supposed to take that class were affected.   The class was replaced with more free play time.

And finally, I understand your issue with the snobbish people, while shopping for a school I could not stand most of the other schools environments and parents and CD was the only school that felt normal.   Until now we do not regret our decision.

    Hi Krieg,

I just was wondering, about the two places extra who move in the city last minute; will that include in the middle of the school year? And also about the "is not for kids that do not speak German at all", which German level the kids should have? If my husband gets an offer my kids will start with private German lessons. My son spoke German until he was 4 and half (when we moved to Argentina) and then had lessons once a week until he was 8, which is when we moved to Ireland. I stopped with the German in Ireland, because my husband was worried about confusing him. My daughter was too small when we moved out from Germany to speak, so I trust that her being young will help her. And since both are learning Irish and doing great (I can not help on that so is all them and their teachers), I assume that German will be much easier for her.  From reading the forum threads I think CD will be the best option for him and my daughter, I also checked the CD web page and I really liked it.

    Many thanks!

Since you live in Bavaria, there is a loophole.

Since your son has not been attending the Grundschule from grade 1, he's not bound by the 2.66 average cut-off for Realschule.

You can find this information in §25 Absatz 5 GrSo, i.e. article 25, paragraph 5 of the Grundschulordnung Bayern (yes, we have a law for everything ;) ):

    Translation:

    • For pupils whose mother tongue is not German and who have not attended a German primary school from grade 1, the suitability for Gymnasium or Realschule can also be attested up to a grade average of 3.33, as long as these low grades are only caused by weaknesses in understanding German which can still be remedied. However, there will have to be a statement in the Übertrittszeugnis (= grade sheet that pupils get on May 2nd attesting which higher school they will attend) to the effect that the pupil is able to follow classes held in German.

So, with two 3s and a 4, he should still be allowed into Realschule.

For details, please read Are there ratings or reviews of Munich schools?

    Hi,

Dear PandaMunich you are so helpful, I have been reading all the posts about this that you have answered :). The loophole link law does not exist anymore :(, I have to look and see if there is another one ;). We are thinking to move back to Munich, Germany (if DH gets a good offer). My son is 10 years old finishing 4th class in Ireland and my daughter is 7 finishing 1st class. After all the reading and asking the friends that stayed in Munich I think the best is to write the Schulberatung. I do not know if it is so easy to change from Mittelschule to Realschule as it looks like in the Schulberatung webpage. I would not mind the Mittelschule for a year so he catch ups in German and then transfer to Realschule, or Gymnasium according to his grades (from the Bildungsweg page it should be possible).

  5. Well, we are already in trouble... to summarise, we always have problems of mold and were told that we did not ventilate enough, so we ventilated more and clean it ourselves regularly. But it just stay the same when winter came we will have problems in the bathroom ceiling and now lately also in the wohnzimmer ceiling. In the bathroom 2 or 3 years ago the fan broke, we told the landlady and she send the Hausmeister who just removed the timer and it works like that now (there are no windows in the bathroom). Now we are moving, but because of the moving, illnesses, etc we did not get to clean it as we use to do it (using bleach). When the realtor came, he just started to make a lot of fuss, he thought first that it was a like in the ceiling. Then he brought a fachman (not a Gutachter/Specialist with tools too measure), and he look at everything he thought it was the isolation. Then they did not tell me more until this week that they said that they talked with the Hausmeister and he/she said that " He have never seen our windows open". Now they insist in bringing an specialist to clean and treat the mould (they do not let us do it ourselves), and that we must paid because we do not ventilate properly (that based in the Hausmeister word, that we never open the windows (i can not imagine how my house will look and stink if we never open the windows), and the previous renter have not problems for 9 years (IMHO: they were a working couple that had a kind only before moving (i think the girl was less than 2 year because she could not walk yet), so only two persons for at least 7 years. We are a family of 4 father, mother, son 4 year and baby 11 months,... then we have to wash more shower more, cook more (kitchen does not have a window and the fan does not have direct connection to the outside), etc... I think that is why they did not have problems).

So my question is since we are leaving in 3 weeks, it is ok to tell them to get whatever they want and paid from our Deposit?, it is 1750 euros plus interest. And then do nothing more than cleaning and let them choose their professional people for the painting too? We are afraid that if we spend money getting someone to paint they will still not give us our deposit.

    Many, many thanks!

  6. Hi :)

I have a stupid question, from what I have read I need to produce the yellow paper thing if I do not go to work after day 3 at home. I slip on a wet floor at work and sprain my ankle on tuesday, the doctor took x-rays and everything and nothing is broken it is just very painful. So the doctor just gave me a bandage that I can wear and according to him I will be able to walk. Although it still hurts a lot. So I did not go to work on wednesday and today. I feel better but since I need to do a lot of walking most of the time I was thinking to stay at home until tomorrow, since the computer work that I have to do I can do it from home too (the lab, greenhouse work is what needs a lot of walking). So only if I do not come on monday (that I plan to) I need to get that paper isnt? Then they do not really pay me I have an stipendium so I am selbtversichert(?) (I paid the insurance myself) does that makes a difference with the paper work?

    Many thanks!

  7. Hello :)

I have Kabel and Medien service, and I use to get CNN. They have changed their programation today, but according to the webpage I should still have CNN (Frei empfangbares Digital TV?). So I was wondering if there is anything that I should buy (Digital receiver?), or anybody else has lost CNN right now and it might comeback later? (my tv is an LG LCD, so it is a digital TV isn't? or it is an analog? and maybe that is why I do not get CNN now :P).

    Many thanks!

  8. I ordered software online from USA and I knew I will have to pay customs since it was $90 (I just could not find the same software in english here, and my german is not good to pay for software in German). So I got the green paper to go the Zollamt in Garching, and according to it I just need to bring the invoice (Rechnung) will it be ok to bring it english? since that is all that I have.

Then I do not know why the person that send if from USA put that the value was $25 (I did not ask for that) do you think I will be in trouble because of that?

    Many thanks!

  9. Hello

I think this is kind of out of topic but I am Mac user since June 2007 and my MacBook just crashed "Invalid Node, etc" (right now the Disk Utility is running since 3pm trying to repair it :P). I have looked online forums, etc... so I think I am still in warranty so I just would like to know if you know which store in Munich will be the best to take my Mac for service. I also need to recover my files (because I did not backup!! shame on me :(). I am also thinking to buy Diskwarrior (but if I can use my warranty and an expert can check it I think it will be better).

    Thanks a lot!

  10. Before I was covered by my husband but I just got a part time job (my gross income is 600 Euro/month), so I guess that is why I also got a letter of a new insurance (with my old card number). I am pregnantand my part time job will finish soon (6 weeks before I deliver as prescribed by law). So I guess as soon as I finish my contract (because it was only for 2 months and a half) I have to let the insurance know so I go back to my husbands insurance?... I think it does not make sense to get a new card for only 2 and a half months (I started to work in March, and TKK just send me the letter last week), I am kind of worried because I am pregnant and I do not know what will happen with my appointments to the doctor, etc... will it be the same? will I have to pay more?

I am glad I found this thread :).

  11. Ok, I know this thread is old, but I hope somebody reads it :). My doctor delivers at the Geisenhofer, so I did not search for clinics and I was just going to go there. However my Natural Birthing teacher told me that the Geisenhofer has a high rate of giving epidurals to FTMs (first time moms) and I am the weird one that has decided that does not want to have an epidural or a painkiller. Do they just put you the thing even if you said no, I do not want it?. If that is true, which other clinic do you recommend? I was thinking in the Dritten Order, but then I read (well translated) some reviews and it did not seem that good. I know that having a home birth will be better if I want it as natural as possible, but since is the first time, we thought that a clinic will be safer in case something unexpected happens and seems that the Dritten Order was not that good in the "unexpected part" (at least from the reviews I read/translated here.

    Many thanks in advance :)

  12. Well just to let you know that I think that if you get your Lohnsteurkarte online, you also get a letter from GEZ... I got it 2 days after I received my Lohnsteurkarte... I have been living here for 3 months and I did not get anything from GEZ until this week that I did the Lohnsteurkarte application online. I did not register with them because I did not have a TV.

Yep III/V is defo the best option if there is a large difference in earnings. You can see it for yourself simply by plugging numbers into the online tax calculators (dont have the URL handy).

I hope somebody checks this thread :). So I got a part time job for a few months, I already have my permit and I just need my Lohsteuerkarte... my husband makes much more than me so I guess I should be class V. I got my work permit as a "Wissenschaftler" so I was wondering if there is another tax class for that.

    Many thanks!
