  1. What are you watching right now?

Really enjoying this performance from the National Theatre's YouTube channel of James Graham's 2013 production of "This House".   It’s 1974, and Britain has a hung Parliament. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backstabbing as the political parties battle to change the future of the nation.   This House is a timely, moving and funny insight into the workings of British politics by James Graham (Ink, ITV's Quiz) and directed by Jeremy Herrin (People, Places and Things). This much-loved production enjoyed two sold-out National Theatre runs, a West End transfer and national tour as well as being filmed by National Theatre Live. You can watch This House from 7pm UK time on Thursday 28 May until 7pm UK time on Thursday 4 June 2020. It was filmed live on stage at the National Theatre in 2013. The running time is 2 hours 40 minutes with a very short interval. It is subtitled.   I was only 12 in 1974, have a better memory of the second half of the play in the late seventies. Fascinating stuff with some rich comic performances. Donated the NT a tenner for an evening's entertainment via PayPal, the theatres have taken a heavy knock.
  2. Brexit: The fallout

The gung-ho Brexit brigade won't care for this Irish perspective on British exceptionalism. Tough.
  3. Declaring fatherhood

Sorry, but you didn't mention that she had already contacted the PT Consulate in Rio and were still waiting.   Anyway, best of luck, hope you can sort this out.
  4. Declaring fatherhood

As a Portuguese citizen, surely your girlfriend should contact the consulate in Rio de Janeiro.
  5. What are you watching right now?

Legacy also available on DVD dubbed into German as "Die Erbschaft" (hate Synchronfassung myself, but if you can stomach it...)
  6. What are you watching right now?

3 seasons of Legacy on DVDørnlund-Følsgaard/dp/B07DKPTKZG/   Also Detectorists on Amazon DE, maybe also eBay. Maybe discs are too old-fashioned for you, but I'm not sure about (legal) online sources in D-Land...but both are worth tracking down.
  7. What are you watching right now?

    Absolutely loved Legacy! Strongly recommend
  8. What are you watching right now?

Surprised no-one here has mentioned Detectorists. Lovely mix of gentle observation & wry humour, sometimes engenders a wee bit of nostalgia for the old country. Modest in its aims, the scripts, acting and direction are spot on. I'm on Season 3, another one to go after that.
  9. Cancel holiday over corona virus?

Any experience with Air France?   I was working in the Caribbean from the end of January onwards and my wife was meant to come out and join me at Easter for a holiday. However the pandemic meant that I had to return to Germany at the end of March; unsurprisingly, her flight disappeared as well.   We put in a claim for a refund of her return flight to Air France, and have just received a reply in English (shortened to its essentials here)   As it is not possible to provide you full refund we would like to offer you a voucher of the value of the price you paid. As a second option it is possible to change your reservation free of charge until the end of June 2020 for new flights scheduled until the end of November 2020. Please let us know your choice. The current regulations have been developed with possible local or short-term disruptions in mind. However, the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has led to unforeseen travel bans and restrictions all over the world. Unfortunately, a massive cutback in flight activity was inevitable and a significant number of flights had to be cancelled.   At Air France and KLM, we believe that the issuance of a refundable voucher is a reasonable balance between the protection of passengers’ rights and the operational realities that airlines have to face because of these exceptional circumstances. Governments around the world have indicated that an approach like this is appropriate during this crisis, provided that these vouchers do not expire in an unreasonably short period of time. Your travel voucher would be fully refundable after 12 months, if you haven’t used it by then.   Oh really?! Of course I am aware of the recent ruling on refunds vs vouchers; realistically, I see no prospect of flying anywhere for quite a while. But my position is quite simple: we asked for and require a full refund and believe that we are fully entitled to this.   Just had a look at the AF claims website which boldly states:   Please note that flight cancellations linked to the coronavirus (Covid-19) are considered to be due to extraordinary circumstances, therefore exempting airlines from paying compensation.   The question is how best to proceed. Anyone else here pushing a claim from Air France / KLM?
  10. Politics Gen XYZ

Just wow. I almost didn't believe this, but here's the actual video...
  11. Coronavirus

I acknowledged earlier that there are major questions for civil liberties and it is entirely legitimate that these are raised. But plenty of the demonstrators are clearly far right and are using this crisis to push other agendas. Of course if you wish to paint them all as brave freedom fighters standing up to tyranny, go ahead. I just see them differently.
  12. Coronavirus

Yeah, right. Many of these clowns demonise themselves, they don’t need anyone else to do it for them.   I guess the following link represents the „Lügenpresse“ for you.
  13. Coronavirus

Do calm down. It's frustrating for everyone, but the more we hang on in, stay at home and keep our distance from others, the sooner we'll be able to return to something like normal life.    There's legitimate concern about civil liberties, but this has to be balanced against the danger to health. There's no easy solution, unless you believe it's all "fake news" like some of the Wutbürger out there.
  14. Brexit: The fallout

Who knows, @fraufruit? As the article indicates, they are all probably heartily tired of the UK by now.   The Brexitoddler is still on ignore, but who wants to waste time reading irrelevant nitpicking and bluster anyway?
  15. Brexit: The fallout

Excellent analysis of the current state of play
  16. Meanwhile, this might help when discussing Johnson & Co's response to Corona...
  17.   Apparently Trump does actually wear a mask when he's away from TV cameras.   What a plonker.
  18. Smoke detectors

Glad I glanced at this thread, we have a couple of detectors but not one in every room. Even the bathroom/loo?   Anyway, just ordered several more on eBay.
  19. Aegisub

The dedicated appears to be down, but maybe you'd get some assistance at the following URL
  20. Coronavirus

Well let’s look at how the pandemic has been handled in the UK. Rednecks or Bullingdon boys, it’s an unholy mess.  Can’t pin this on Labour either.
  21. Berlin restaurants reopen

So last Friday some places started to re-open for business. Part of me wants to support our favourite locals, but part of me still hesitates to sit at a table in an enclosed space with others, even with all the distancing measures.   Has anyone taken the leap? Thoughts?
  22. Coronavirus

Indeed, as this article also explains...
  23. Coronavirus

      Not following the science....
  24. Coronavirus

Corona UK lockdown timetable was much too slow. The original report is behind a paywall, but the essential findings are summarised here:   Of course TT's Johnson clone(s) will go into full tantrum mode, behaviour meant to distract from the sheer incompetence on display. Note that the piece originally appeared in the Torygraph, not the Guardian...chickens coming home to roost, Prime Minister?
  25. Brexit: The fallout

The Höllenfeuer of Brexit are burning brightly...
