  1. Brexit: The fallout

I think you're right, @murphaph. Johnson has successfully managed to adopt the Berlusconi / Trump playbook: if you're going to be shameless, you might as well go the whole hog.   Briefly back to Hartlepool, as this is the Brexit thread: apparently many were unhappy that the Labour candidate was pro-Remain. So that is still very much a factor. The Tory vote benefitted from a significant return of former UKIP supporters.
  2. Brexit: The fallout

Watching the election coverage on the BBC as the overall results come in, it sounds like the vaccination programme was a key factor across the whole country
  3. Brexit: The fallout

How right you were, @Keleth. May they reap the benefits.
  4. Brexit: The fallout

Meanwhile, as the UK election results trickle in, the by-election in Hartlepool has just been announced: first Tory MP since 60 years... Johnson's Jersey gunboats to fire a salvo...   https://twitter.com/BritainElects/status/1390548721243459584?s=20

One small silver lining - where does this situation put Marine Le Pen, admirer of all things Brexit? 🇫🇷🤡🇬🇧
  10. Brexit: The fallout

It's highly likely that, however absurd these theatrics might appear, Johnson senses his "Falklands moment" and is hoping for a fillip in today's elections across the UK.

  12.   That must be from several years ago, the whole area is now more or less completely built up, with no gaps.   Typically Google Street View in Germany is very often years out of date, primarily because of objections on the basis of privacy concerns.   Edit: @Brockman acknowledged that is is now amongst new buildings...
  13. "Really good" Indian restaurants in Berlin

I've yet to try it myself. English-language article from the Berliner Zeitung   https://www.berliner-zeitung.de/en/tiffin-pushing-the-envelope-of-indian-cuisine-in-berlin-li.155776.amp
  14. Berlin Corona Vaccinations

Latest updates on vaccinations in Berlin. Priority now is Group 3, teachers etc.    Concerning the second jab, over 60's who have already had AZ for their first will receive BionTech for the second at the former Tegel Airport Impfzentrum; under 60's will receive Moderna at Erika-Hess-Eisstadion in Wedding.   http://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/330073/   https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/coronaimpfv_2021-04/__4.html
  15.   RBB story on this particular case
  16. Coronavirus

My parents both died in the last decade, so weren't around during the pandemic. But if they were still alive, and in a home, I'd expect - like @murphaph - that the staff caring for them would all be vaccinated. If these were anti-vax for whatever reason, whether Querdenker, Esoteriker, Reichsbürger or Spartakists, that's up to them. I'm not interested in their private opinions: they should simply not be in this line of work, sorry.
  17. What's got you flummoxed today?

Kiez Knallhart on RTL2...yeah, right. I also enjoyed 4 Blocks but know it's not the whole picture. Does everyone in Munich wear Lederhosen?   Here's a recent (2020) reportage about Sonnenallee. Fairly traditional RBB style, but still worth a look.
  18. What's got you flummoxed today?

Yes to all of this. Folks see the news and think OMG, how could anyone live there! I admit I deliberately avoided Sonnenallee yesterday - my first revolutionary 1st May experience was back in 1993 and as an elderly gent these days don't need to witness it at first hand. But only a few blocks away everything was peaceful, people out and about taking a stroll along the canal past the cherry blossoms. In Neukölln you can go from the most Arabic street in the city through hipster central to bourgeois balcony in a few minutes. You can keep your Prenzlauer Berg
  19. What are you listening to right now?

BBC Sounds: Henning Wehn investigates 'Ostrock' - the rock and pop music scene in the old East Germany. Originally broadcast in 2011.   https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b010mt30
  20. Brexit: The fallout

But hold the front page, every cloud has a silver lining. The forthcoming "Museum of Brexit" - which aims to celebrate the movement to "sovereignty" - has just received its first items: an imperial weights scale a net used by fishermen on the first day the UK left the EU Remoaner satire, you say? It's in the Express!    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1429409/Brexit-news-Museum-of-Brexit-collection-items-evg
  21. Brexit: The fallout

They might need a while longer for it to fully sink in, especially as they were particularly susceptible to Brexit propaganda.   Note that Farage (currently visiting his "old friend" Trump in the US) is keeping his head well down on this issue.
  22. Brexit: The fallout

UK Fisheries CEO Jane Sandell: “George Eustice owes our crews and the Humberside region an explanation as to why the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) was unable even to maintain the rights we have had to fish in Norwegian waters for decades, never mind land the boasts of a ‘Brexit Bonus’, which has turned to disaster. “In consequence, there will be no British-caught Arctic cod sold through chippies for our national dish – it will all be imported from the Norwegians, who will continue to sell their fish products to the UK tariff-free while we are excluded from these waters. "Quite simply, this is a disgrace and a national embarrassment.” Yorkshire's last distant water trawler scuppered after Government walks away from talks with Norway https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/people/hull-vessel-kirkella-yorkshires-last-distant-water-trawler-scuppered-after-government-walks-away-from-talks-with-norway-3219797   Simulpost with @murphaph. Another perspective from the Yorkshire Post (I grew up in East Yorkshire)
  23. Why are you unhappy today?

That is a tragic loss, so sorry for you and your family
  24. Brexit: The fallout

I have a feeling this might explain the absence from these boards of certain hardcore Brexit supporters: overwhelmed by patriotic sentiment, they have returned to the fields and orchards of Albion to “take back control” from those dastardly foreign Johnnies. Living in a caravan, up at the crack of dawn, they’re simply too exhausted to log on to TT.
