  2. I cannot understand why you do not receive a monthly pay slip.

Ask your employer to certify your monthly income. If you do not have written certification that you have a permanent job and a regular income you will not have much chance of getting a loan

Have you thought about asking your employer for a loan?

  3. @Gwen: All shops, cinemas and some restaurants in Germany close between 1-2 p.m. on Christmas Eve. So apart from stocking up on Christmas presents you need to stock up on bread, milk and things to eat. The shops open again on 27.12.2014 and close again on Sunday. Sunday shopping in Germany is only allowed a few times a year and then the shops are only open from 1-5.p.m.

Hope you and your family have a nice first Christmas in Germany.

  4. I sincerly hope that you will soon be feeling better.

Perhaps the people below can help you.

We also have an English speaking telephone helpline available on the German telephone network, where you can talk to someone who has experience of the problems that alcohol abuse can cause and the solution that A.A. has to offer.

  5. What does it say in your contract? Are you are entiltled to xx days holiday for every full month you worked there or parts of a month? If you are entitled to a certain amount of holidays and couldn't take them, the days are normally paid out with your last salary.

Your employer should also give you an Urlaubsbescheingiung stating how many days holiday you took at the company.

  6. Some excellent comments above. The problem is Germans do not have a word for small talk so you have to explain to them what it is.

Ask your student's to make a list like this.

    Small Talk

    Safe Topics/Topics to avoid

    The Weather/Politics

    Good books and films/Salary

  7. As Engelchen correctly stated, as soon as you are given your notice, you are expected to look for another job so that you don't actually become unemployed. Sometimes the Arbeitsagentur sets you job application targets such as you must apply for two jobs per week. This means you have to prove that you have applied for two jobs per week. Print out E-Mails, copy job application letters and take them with you to your next appointment at the Arbeitsagentur. Failure to do so could mean that you do not receive unemployment benefit for a certain period of time.

  8. A date for upcoming Christmas Bazaar has been selected, requested, and approved. 29th November will be the date! Mark your calendars. Notify your friends. Commence cooking your special jams and jellies, your home-made chutneys, and your delicious cakes. Begin sewing your pretty little things. Don't delay – we’d like as many items as possible. Save that date so that you can volunteer to help with set up, selling, or clean-up.

  9. You are entitled to an Arbeitsbescheinigung if you have worked for less than 6 months at a company. This is a very short and simple statement where the employer confirms that you have worked from xxx to xxx as a xxx at the company. After working longer than 6 months at a company you are entitled to a written reference-Arbeitszeugnis.

The Antrag auf Arbeitslosengeld is usually given to the person who has registered as being unemployed at the Arbeitsargentur. They fill their name and address in and send it to their ex-employer who confirms how long they worked for the company, what position they held, how much they earned in the last 12 months there and where thery were registered regarding health insurance etc.

  10. Here is some interesting information about the Stutttgart-west area.

  11. Unemployment benefit is based on your income over the last 12 months. In order to work out how much unemployment benefit you are entitled to, the Arbeitsagentur gives you the document “Antrag auf Arbeitslosengeld” This document should be sent by you to your past employer who will confirm how long you worked there and what you earned during the last 12 months. If you have not returned the said completed form then you will not receive unemployment benefit.

    Registration as unemployed

The registration as unemployed serves as an assurance of your financial entitlements. It is an essential requirement to obtain unemployment benefit and must be done at the latest on the first day of unemployment (at the earliest three months before) in person with the Employment Agency responsible for your place of residence.

Forms for registering as unemployed are available at your competent Employment Agency, they are not available online.

As you mentioned that you are deaf, the link about vocational training for disabled people (in English) may be of interest to you. If unemployed people lack certain skills such as using Excel etc, the Arbeitsagentur may send them on a course to learn such skills and thus improve their chances on the job market.

  12. Stuttgart has some nice areas but I would stay away from the city centre and anywhere near the railway station/ Europaviertel if I were you.

Stuttgart is set in a valley and is the most polluted city in Germany. According to European air pollution laws, certain pollution levels should not be exceed for more than 35 days in a year. Stuttgart had already had 36 days where the pollution levels were above the limit in the first quarter this year.

Stuttgart–west and Feueresee are both nice areas. Stuttgart-west is on the outer city limits. Many of the houses there were built 100 years ago and have no private parking spaces which is a big problem for people who need a car.

In todays edition of the Stuttgarter Nachrichten (the local newspaper), there was an article about proposed city parking fees which should come into force as of October 2015. A one hour parking ticket will cost more than 3,20€. There will also be a residents parking fee of 400€ pro year but residents will not have a guaranteed reserved parking space.

I hasten to add, the public transport system (bus, tram and underground) in Stuttgart is excellent, if you live and work in the greater Stuttgarter area you don’t really need a car. If the trams are on strike then the buses don’t run either. If the trains strike there are no underground trains running on that day.

    Tram lines in Stuttgart

Stuttgart-Degerloch is a nice area and is not in the actual valley. See the first photo in the link below.

Esslingen and Ludwigsburg are about a 15 minute underground/train journey away from Stuttgart. Both towns are interesting places to live and have lots of open-air events in the summer months.

  13. If the worst comes to the worst, make sure you get a good reference. Have you worked on any important (international) projects? Do you speak any foreign languages that were used to communicate with cutomers? What are your key responsibilities? Make a list of things you would like mentioned in a reference.

Malt-Teaset correctly mentioned the things you have to be careful about. The reason for leaving a company is very important and will be written in your reference. If you sign an "Aufhebungsvertrag" this means that you agreed that your contract be terminated. If you are then unemployed for a long time this might be difficult to explain at a future interview. If the company has no work for you, the word "betriebsbedingt" will appear in your reference which gives an entirely different picture as to why your contract was terminated.

  14. If you have no idea what I am talking about, read on.

The Wars of the Roses were a series of dynastic wars for the throne of England. They were fought between supporters of two rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet, the houses of Lancaster and York. They were fought in several sporadic episodes between 1455 and 1487, although there was related fighting before and after this period. The conflict resulted from social and financial troubles that followed the Hundred Years' War, combined with the mental infirmity and weak rule of Henry VI, which revived interest in the alternative claim to the throne of Richard, Duke of York.

The final victory went to a Lancastrian claimant, Henry Tudor, who defeated the last Yorkist king, Richard III, at the Battle of Bosworth Field. After assuming the throne as Henry VII, Henry Tudor married Elizabeth of York, the daughter of Edward IV, thereby uniting the two houses. In an era leading to what is sometimes referred to as the "Golden Age" of Elizabeth,[1] the House of Tudor ruled England and Wales until 1603.
