  1. I changed my mind about which is my favourite a few years ago. I always went for Empire, but you know what? No. Because the middle section with the training and Yoda crap bores the shit out of me. The beginning and end are superb, but I just want to fast forward through the middle. So for me it has to be the original, as there isn't a part that I don't love.

  2. My neighbours (Husband German, wife French) have 2 kids who are both fluent in French and German, and speak some English too, as she speaks little German and him zero French. The official household language between the parents is English. I always find it utterly amazing to listen to the kids talk to each other in either language depending on their mood, or sometimes switch mid sentence between them without skipping a beat. What an advantage they will have later on in life! It should definitely be encouraged, not punished!

  3. Why would you want anything other than 101 types of cheddar??? (Actually, scrap anything other than mature or stronger.)

Apart from Wensleydale with cranberries. Love that stuff. The exception that proves the rule.

  4. I kept my UK licence too. I asked the local licencing office here, as I was considering changing it for a German one, and they told me as my UK license is a valid EU license I shouldn't bother! As mentioned above, all the DVLA want your address for is to send you fines etc. As I don't intend to drive in the UK, I don't expect any issues.

  5. YL6, doesn't stop the telephone companies, gyms and various other establishments allowing people to sign contracts though, as we see on here regularly! Still, either way it's not racism. Xenophobia maybe, but I imagine there's something in the T&C's that it's at their discretion to offer the finance or not.

  6. Rymdmannen - That is correct that "they" choose where to take you to court, obviously at great inconvenience to Joe Public, expense, and of course they will most likely choose a court that they have found to be financially sympathetic to their claims in the past.

  7.

Metall, I gave up six years ago and have been happier alone than I ever was with someone. I don't think I was made for a relationship and I've more or less accepted that. Sometimes, I think it might be nice to have some company.. but that thought is rapidly followed by the thought "Damn.. if I had someone, it'd cut into my reading time."

Ah Nina, that sounds so familiar! I'm sticking with dogs and books, much more straight forward!

  8. I did the same myself, and it wasn't all that complicated. The one thing you will definitely need to consider (or your landlord will!) is the size of the dish you'll need to get UK tv. For me in Leipzig I have a 150cm dish, which is bigger than it sounds! (Or it was to me when it arrived...)

I bought a Sky HD box in the UK from Ebay for about 40 quid. The German box came with the Sky.de package I'm signed up to. The dish itself was around €90, and add in the cabling and LNB's for another approx. €50. You'll also need a multifeed adapter (€20), as the 2 LNB's need to be in slightly different places in relation to the dish to get the right angle of dangle for the 2 satellites.

After that, I downloaded a satfinder app and fiddled around for a while to get the LNB's in the right position, et voila! I can watch UK or German tv.

Oh, and of course I forgot the bracket to attach the whole kaboodle to the wall, about another €20 odd.

Or of course alternately, you can try Bavaria satellites as suggested above! Though they never answered my email when I tried, so ended up giving it a go myself as above... ;-)

  9. I don't know about Germany, but BK in the UK used to do the same. If it was quiet, they sent the staff to the rest room or wherever and they didn't get paid. However, that practice is now illegal in the UK I believe. On one other point, I work 8.5 hours or 10.45 hrs, and get paid for 8 and 10 respectively. Whether I take the breaks or not, they are unpaid.

  10. Basbrem. For me (in my opinion intentionally) it worked the other way around. This record was my only chance to prove it wasn't done by me, or my connection. However, the lawyers obtained my details within 3 days of the alledged incident, and then waited until 6 months and 3 days before sending me the letter. Maybe I'm just a suspicious minded scouser, but it seems all too convenient that they wait until I can no longer prove my innocence before sending me the damn letter....

  11. Ah, comdirect. I tried them when I first moved here in 2010, and was very surprised to get a letter back telling me I couldn't have an account. And yet when I went in to the local Commerzbank branch a few days later, they were more than happy to open an account for me there and then.... I still have no idea what the difference is in criteria! On paper they were exactly the same.

  12. Fraufruit, in the eyes of these vultures, there is no difference. I've never even downloaded anything, never mind shared torrent files. Yet here I am possibly going to court and being found guilty of something I haven't done, that they refuse to show me the evidence of, despite my requests.

  13. Yes, cases have definitely gone to court (and mine may well do too). Then it depends where they decide to take you to court, as apparently they can choose any court in Germany, which I assume they base upon where they have had the most success with the claims. Since they rejected my lawyer's offer of 800 instead of the "reduced" 2100 they wanted, my lawyer advised to pay 800 then let them decide whether to accept, or take me to court to try and claim more. My lawyer is under the impression that even if the court finds in their favour, the "compensation" will be most likely (a risk, of course!) be less than they are trying to claim.

  14. Well SP, it isn't theft is it? Because downloading (stealing if you will) the file is not punished. But uploading is, and disproportionately so with little or no actual proof required by the accuser. Is that not like being fined for leaving a nice tray of cookies on your windowledge to cool which a passerby then takes (without being punished)?

  15. Hmmm. Well, my UK insurance company told me a green card was not needed to drive in Germany (or the EU states as mentioned above). The 3rd party or comprehensive liability depends on the individual company. I've had different cover, varying from 7 days to 30 days automatic comprehensive coverage, after which period I was still covered 3rd party for extended periods up to the full year of cover.

  16. Yes, the TV will work just fine. I still have a maybe 10 year old monster CRT that works perfectly over here, connected to my dish via a 12 or more year old Sky digibox. I hope it works forever, as I never want to have to lift it again!
