  1. Would just like to bump this post. I'm still alive and well. The shop has moved though to Pasing; we teamed up with a mobile phone repair shop in Pasing Main station a good group of guys called PHONESTOP.eu...

If anyone is interested in a demonstration of a Windows Virtual Desktop using a similar system to Synology NAS, please get in touch. This is something I feel could save your bacon! We use it specifically for small businesses with users of 1-4 (Small hotels, Doctors Surgerys, Lawyers, Tax Consultants)

Basically you are using a Windows virtual desktop on a cloud device; the device is very similar to a Synology NAS which stays in your home or office. The advantage of using this device is that (A) The data stays in your device (B) it is mirrored on more than one drive (C) should your laptop crash one day you are covered with the virtual machine which can be transferred to a different server within hours and get you back online.

Look forward to your call or Email. info[at]zeklink.de or 089 120 720 92

    Best regards,

    Patrick.

  2. Service Wüsste Deutschland. (Service Desert) Germany is infamous for no-customer service. There are exceptions to the rule but those people have been trained by outside companies (take Karstadt for example) the staff were terrible until they decided to get trainers in from outside. It's just the German way; [Cold] They need to warm up... but it takes a few months... maybe years in some cases ;-)

Oh yeah, and buy Japanese... they don't cheat on their emissions tests and rarely break-down. Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda

I am German by passport, yes. Been here for some time, enough to get it. sure. Googling MPU, done.

What you never find in the results, is what I have to tell the MPU people to pass the test. Its like a secret?

You have to convince them that what you did in the past was pure stupidity, how sorry you are and show how you have changed your life. If you are being sent to an MPU for use of alcohol or drugs there's no point in turning up unless you have a year of abstinence and can prove it. You get the proof by visiting the 5th Floor of the Forensisch Toxikologisches Centrum GmbH at Bayerstraße 53 4x times a year where you do an expensive hair-cut (€150 a pop) 3 x 3cm which is then chemically examined to see if you have been a good boy / girl for the last 3 months. I'm currently on my third certificate, one more to go in September.

Do the police actually bother with stuff like this?

If they bother with people crossing the road on a red man, drunk people on bicycles, giving the finger to the old nettle licking sour-bag blocwart and for forgetting to apply for a genehmigung for farting... they sure as hell bother with this crap.

It is not a desktop system and it sounds like you definitely cannot afford to lose data.   I would not go with a cheap or free solution.   There are many possibilities.

I'm not specifically looking for cheap or free. I am open to offers and suggestions of what is available (preferably in German) Zwiebelfisch had a couple of suggestions but it looks like they are based in the US.

    Some questions:

    1. How many users

    2. How many concurrent users

    3. How much data

    4. How many changes per workday as a percentage

    5. Do you have a tech support staff

    6. Can you afford to lose data changes

If you have a few users and they are not using the DB concurrently, and the database is small with few changes which can be re-entered,  then use MS Access.

Otherwise use something that fits with the rest of your infrastructure.

    Good luck

    1. How many users - 1,000

    2. How many concurrent users circa 300

    3. How much data - 1TB should do it - with pictures  & documentation

    4. How many changes per workday as a percentage - not sure how to calculate this but it would not change that much on a day to day basis - lets say 15%

Tracking tools when they need to be sent from one site to another or when they need to be sent to a testing company for annual check.

    5. Do you have a tech support staff - Yes

    6. Can you afford to lose data changes - Not really, would like to avoid if at all possible.

  7. Hi wise people,

Has anyone got a recommendation for a database (could be cloud based) for itemising company hardware? More specifically for a construction company to itemise it's kit (from Bohrhammers to Baggers etc...)

The company is open to a custom type database that could be specifically designed and tailored for their needs.

What are the free and paid for alternatives?

Would anyone be interested in a job designing something and putting it together?

    Look forward to replies.

    TG.

  8. Have you considered using a FritzFon? They work just as well as normal phones but are connected to the WLAN. You could also get a DECT Booster for your existing setup but AFAIK they are quite pricey. If you have CAT.7 cable upstairs you could attach a repeater for your fritzbox WLAN signal upstairs. A FritzBox repeater is easy to come by for €20 if you know where to look ;-)

I had this too when I plugged my USB into a friend's computer. All my word documents renamed and the data in it gibberish. Looked like a data hijack to me. Unfortunately no solutions. Since then I always kept a backup of all my docs.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but, from my minimal knowledge of the data recovery possibilities open to the tech-savvy, nothing sensitive you've deleted or logged out of is actually gone out of your harddisk forever.

To do that sucessfully someone who knows their way around the laptop's BIOS and the W10 registry and other history logging processes would need to completely flush the machine of all traces of your activities.

    @TallGuy

Thanks for the recommendation. The only safe way to get rid of personal information from a hard-drive is to format the drive and I don't mean with a Windows tool. Use Parted-Magic, it contains a tool called disk-eraser which writes zeroes to the whole disk. It's free, you can download it and install it to a USB stick using Rufus.

Give me a break. I am a Linux user AND developer and I think Windows 10 is one of the finest OSes ever made.

Saying that Windows 10 was released untested and they waited for the users to complain is basically top level nonsense.

Windows 10 free update and then forced update was (to date) the biggest money maker for the notebook repair industry! Finest OS ever! ;)

But the question is why a consumer would like to buy a NEW system right now with Windows 7?

Because an old dog can't learn new tricks and older people hate change. Young people adapt to change quicker but when your 60 and run your own business and some youngster comes along and tells you you need a new system, you feel like telling him to go F himself.

It's not a question about acceptance of change and the refusal thereof, it's Microsoft trying to make money by adding gimmicks that nobody needs. Ubuntu desktop experience hasn't changed that much since 10.04 (we're now on 16.10 I believe) whereas Mickeysoft has gone through several very annoying operating systems. Each one trying to outdo the last one by being more frustrating.

Microsoft need to stick with one business model to be successful, stick with the XP/Win7 interface that anyone can use, stop fu*k1ng about with tiles and tabs, offer security upgrades when I turn off my machine or let me choose when to install them, charge me pro-licence and offer me continuous updates for a minimal fee! Yes Bill Gates is the richest man on the planet by locking people into his idea of what they need and his licensing system. Linux will mature and one day push MS aside.

Why would something order a laptop today with Windows 7 instead of Windows 10? I assume it is the "Windows 7 was better" mentality. In most cases it is just people refusing to accept change.

  15. Hey guys!

Just wanted to say thanks to all our loyal customers and share some news:

The PC Magazine "Chip" did an article on ZEKLINK this month; it's in German. Chip came and interviewed us for an article about what a notebook owner should try to fix themselves and when to realise it's time to hand it over to a professional. We are one of the best Notebook and PC Repair companies in Munich, with 50+ Five Star reviews on Google. There are a couple of negatives too but I think that's a given with any service.

    Happy reading!

Plus the postage from Oklahoma which could be around €100, not mentioning the hassle of going to pick up your new (second-hand) notebook from the Zollamt in Garching and proving to them that you have paid the tax.

Replacing a keyboard can be a very expensive undertaking unless you know what you are doing. Why not let a professional company take care of it for you? http://www.zeklink.de
