Weather

This article describes the general weather patterns in Germany as well as providing links to weather forecasts for each of the major cities.

General patterns

In the north-west and the north of Germany the climate is oceanic and rain falls all year round. Winters there are relatively mild and summers tend to be comparatively cool, even though temperatures can reach above 30 degrees Celsius (86 °F) for prolonged periods of time.

In the east of Germany the climate shows clear continental features; winters can be very cold for long periods, and summers can become very warm. Here, too, long dry periods are often recorded.

In the central part and the south there is a transitional climate which varies from moderately oceanic to continental, depending on the location. Hot summers with temperatures up to around 30 degrees Celsius (86 °F) are likely but not guaranteed.

The hottest recorded temperature in Germany was a sultry 40.2°C (104.36°F), set on 13 August 2003 in both Karlsruhe and Freiburg. The coldest ever temperature was recorded at Funtensee, in the Berchtesgadener Alps, on 24 December 2001 - a bracing -45.9°C (-50.6°F).

The Deutsche Wetterdienst is the German meteorological agency and provides (also partly in English) detailed weather forecasts, weather warnings, information on the climate and on climate change, and other weather-related information.
