Technische Universität München
The
Technische Universität München (TUM) is one of two universities in Munich. Its faculties include Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Informatics and Medicine.
The university was founded in 1868 and consists of three campuses. The focal point of the university is on Arcisstrasse, west of Schwabing in central Munich. However, more students study at the self-contained campus near
Garching, just north of Munich. There is also a smaller campus at
Weihenstephan, 40km north of Munich.
Some 20,000 students study at the TUM, of whom 4,000 come from abroad. There is a heavy male bias (70:30) resulting from the scientific focus of the university. Munich's largest university, the
Ludwigs-Maximilian-Universität (LMU), focuses on classical studies.
In October 2006, the TUM and LMU were named as two of the three elite universities in Germany. This news firmly places Munich in pole position as the academic capital of Germany, and the prestige will generate enormous benefits for both universities. See
TUM and LMU are Germany's best universities.
