Public holidays

Public holidays in Germany are approximately equal to Sundays in terms of what businesses will be open. Most office workers get the day off. Shops are closed. Museums and restaurants have their usual Sunday opening hours.

Note that "public holidays" are known as "bank holidays" in the UK.

In Germany, whenever a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday, many workers will also take the prior Monday or following Friday respectively. This extra day off is known as a 'Brückentag' or 'Fenstertag'.

A great website to put in your bookmarks is feiertage.net. It lists all public holidays in Germany, sorted by state and by year.
