Ludwigs-Maximilian-Universität
The
Ludwigs-Maximillian-Universität (LMU) is one of two universities in Munich. Its faculties include Law, Economics, History and the Arts, Philosophy, Languages and Literatures, Mathematics and Biology.
The university was founded in 1472 in
Ingolstadt, and moved to Munich in 1826. It is located between
Schwabing and
Odeonsplatz. The main building is on a square now named Geschwister-Scholl-Platz after the anti-Nazi resistance group, the
White Rose. The U-Bahn station is called
Universität.
Some 47,000 students study at the LMU, of which around 7,500 are international students. Females outweigh males by nearly 2:1.
In October 2006, the LMU and Munich's second university, the
Technische Universität München, were named as two of the three elite universities in Germany. This news firmly places Munich in pole position as the academic capital of Germany, and the prestige will generate enormous benefits for both universities. See
