What is Leitkultur exactly?

This is a German word which seems to be attempting to seep into the English language.

I think it refers to the established thinking in German popular culture. Or something. Not quite sure.

It is used in the TT chat forum a couple of times:

Foreigners living in Munich
... and again

Has something to do with the conservative member of parliament Angela Merkel and her views on immigration and intercultural integration.
