Infineon Technologies AG was founded in April 1999 when the semiconductor operations of parent company, Siemens AG, were spun off to form a separate legal entity. In March 2006 Siemens sold off its last lot of Infineon shares. As of 2005, Infineon had about 36,000 employees worldwide, 7,200 of them involved in research and development.
Infineon has spun-off the Memory Products group into a new, separate company under the name of Qimonda. An IPO is planned for this new entity.
