Hofbräu München
Although arguably the most famous of Munich's breweries, the
Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München is in fact the smallest, with annual production of barely one-tenth that of
Paulaner or
Spaten-Franziskaner. It is owned by the Free State of Bavaria – one of a number of breweries owned by the state.
Hofbräu München is mostly famous among international tourists for the
Hofbräuhaus beer hall, and the rowdy Hofbräu-Festzelt at Oktoberfest.
The brewery was founded in 1529 on the site of the Hofbräuhaus, before moving to the site of the still-existing
Hofbräukeller beer garden. The brewery is now to be found on the outskirts of Munich in Riem.
The flagship beer is the "Original" Helles (pale) beer (5.1%), and the tweaked version (6%) served at Oktoberfest. They also produce a Dunkles (dark) and various wheat beers, plus seasonal beers such as a Maibock (7.2%) and an unfiltered summer beer.
