Funtensee
Funtensee is a lake above
Königssee in the
Berchtesgaden Alps famous for recording Germany's coldest temperature.
only 1600 metres above sea level (barely half as high as Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze), Funtensee is in a northeast-facing corrie and basically doesn't see any sunshine for six months of the year. Cold air sinks into this hollow (because colder air is heavier) and gets trapped. The more cold air that gets trapped there, the colder the temperature gets.
On 24 December 2001, the weather station at Funtensee recorded Germany's coldest temperature: -45.9 degrees C (-50.6°F).
In the summer it is a popular hiking area, with one of the Alps' largest alpine huts - the Kärlingerhaus - on the shores of the lake.
