Football World Cup 2006

The
Football World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world, exceeding even the Olympic Games. The finals are held every four years with the 2006 competition taking place in Germany. The exact dates of the 2006 Football World Cup finals are
Friday 9th June through
Sunday 9th July 2006. Note that in German the
World Cup is called the
Weltmeisterschaft. This is abbreviated to

Host cities
A total of 12 German cities have been selected to host the tournament. They are: Berlin, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hanover, Kaiserslautern, Cologne, Leipzig,
Munich, Nuremberg, and Stuttgart.
Competing nations
The following 32 teams will be playing in the finals:

Opening ceremony
The opening ceremony of the 2006 Football World Cup will be held in Munich on Friday 9th June 2006. The first game of the tournament will also be played in Munich, immediately after the opening ceremony. The newly built Munich stadium at Fröttmaning will host a further five games including one of the semi-finals on 5th July.

Munich games
The dates of all the World Cup games to be held in
Munich are as follows:
- 6pm Friday 9th June 2006: Germany v. Costa Rica (Opening game)
- 6pm Wednesday 14th June: Tunisia v. Saudi Arabia
- 6pm Sunday 18th June: Brazil v. Australia
- 9pm Wednesday 21st June: Côte d'Ivoire v. Serbia and Montenegro
- 5pm Saturday 24th June: Last 16, winner A v. runner up B
- 9pm Wednesday 5th July: Semi final, Winner Q3 - Winner Q4
The final will be held 8pm Sunday 09.Jul.2006 in
Berlin
