The Football World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world, exceeding even the Olympic Games. The finals are held every four years with the 2006 competition taking place in Germany. The exact dates of the 2006 Football World Cup finals are Friday 9th June through Sunday 9th July 2006. Note that in German the World Cup is called the Weltmeisterschaft. This is abbreviated to WM. A total of 12 German cities have been selected to host the tournament. They are: Berlin, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hanover, Kaiserslautern, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg, and Stuttgart.

The opening ceremony of the 2006 Football World Cup will be held in Munich on Friday 9th June 2006. The first game of the tournament will also be played in Munich, immediately after the opening ceremony. The newly built Munich stadium at Fröttmaning will host a further five games including one of the semi-finals on 5th July.
