Fischbachau
Fischbachau is a town in southern Bavaria. In the winter it is a good destination for cross-country skiing (langlaufen). The town is reachable from Munich with the
Bayerische Oberlandbahn. The train station is not in the town center itself, but a couple of kilometers away. There is a bus which runs during the week, but not on weekends. There is one ski hire shop in the town center, at Hauptstrasse 16. To get there from the trainstation it's best to either walk or hitch a lift. Hitchhiking is very easy. Cross-country ski hire costs €10. The shop is run by a family - the head of which used to compete in ski-jumping competitions back in 1946, he has his certificates on the wall.
The ski trails (loipen) around here are quite nice, sign-posted and easy to follow. Both classic and skating tracks.
In the center of the town is the "Klosterstube" - a former monastery, now a beer hall. It's quite nice.
On the road out of Fischbachau is the
Café Winkelstuberl which specialises in cakes. On nice days, the place is packed full of bikers and hikers enjoying coffee and cakes. This place is well worth a visit.
