History of cricket in Germany

The earliest mention of cricket in Germany dates back to 1850, and the English public schools sports system was often seen as a model in continental Europe, so cricket was reasonably established in Germany. This ended with the 2nd World War when cricket's close association with England made it politically incorrect. More or less 50 years would pass before cricket would re-establish itself here. The new Deutscher Cricket Bund (DCB) was founded in 1988.

Cricket clubs throughout Germany

Berlin

There's a team called Britannia, they train on the Olympiastadion complex in the summer months, and train in the winter evenings, every Monday, at a sports halle near U bahn Berliner Straße..(Prinzregentenstrasse). Chances of playing are a plus, as it's a small club,(and happen to be 2nd League Champions) and not as big as BCC...

Berlin CC is the big BCC mentioned above.

Other teams include

1. BCC 2. PCCB 3. ACCB 4. V89 5. Britannia 6. DSSC

More info at the Deutscher Cricket Bund including the current Tabelle for the Berlin league, although that website's more flashy than functional.

Munich

People are often surprised to hear that there is a lively cricket scene in Munich, but cricket is said to be the second most popular sport worldwide, so even the football-crazy heart of Bavaria cannot remain immune to this subtle and intriguing game. The early 90s saw the formation of cricket clubs in Munich.

Eight cricket clubs now form the Bayerischer Cricket Verband (BCV), which is a regional member of the DCB, which is an associate member of the European Cricket Council (ECC), which is a part of International Cricket Council (ICC), the governing body of cricket.

The season starts around May and runs until the Oktoberfest. An Indian summer in October will often see hastily-arranged friendly matches. There is unfortunately no grass pitch in Munich, so artificial pitches are used. The League is highly competitive, with the winner going on to represent BCV in the DCB finals. The Cup is also fiercely contested, but many friendly games and tours are held every weekend to allow even the most occasional player to participate.

England may be the home of cricket and Australia may be the World Champions, but the epicentre of cricket is now the Indian subcontinent. This is mirrored in the profile of Munich cricket clubs.

Lufthansa Service Sportclub (LSSC) were the 2004 Munich champions and are a largely Sri Lankan team. As the name suggests, they are linked to the airport. They used to play near the airport visitor centre, but their ground is now nearby in Attaching. Serendib Sport Club (SSC) is another Sri Lankan team whose ground is in the east of Munich, not too far from the European School in Neuperlach.

Pakistan is represented by the Pak-Orient Cricket Club (POCC) who play in the north of Munich and are the reigning Munich Champions. Followers of India tend to choose either the Cricket Club Bayern Munich (CCB), or Munich International Cricket Club (MIC), whose ground is close to the Rosengarten Biergarten in the Westpark.

The most central club is the Munich Cricket Club (MCC), whose ground is in the Englischer Garten, and whose members are largely English-speaking. Nearby attractions include the Chinese Tower Biergarten and the nudist area. Cricket Club Passau and Tegernsee Cricket Club are both outside Munich.
