Californian wines - Munich

Having lived for years in California, I like to take a bottle of a good Napa Valley cabernet or something similar when invited to dinner at German friends here in Munich. So where to find a decent one? There's Gallo for about 3 EUR in some of the markets, but that's the swill I drank as a graduate student. I searched online and in stores and come up with a few sources of the better stuff. ...

The Allois Dallmayr delicatessen downtown on Marienhof has some top bottles from Caymus (which is as good as California gets), Merryvale, Penfolds (Australia) and some others not so pricey.

Feinkost Käfer, in Bogenhausen at Prinzregentenstraße 73, has some Californians as well as Aussies and Kiwis. Prices tend to be high, but there are a few reasonably priced bottles. This upscale deli is a local legend, but there's an online catalog here: Käfer Weine (PDF).

Hertie (Hauptbahnhof, underground level) has a modest selection of CA bottles in their wine section.

Geisel Vinothek, a chic restaurant in Hotel Excelsior near the Hauptbahnhof, has some CA wines by the glass in addition to French and others. Their retail outlet (All About Wine) at Karlsplatz 25 has a few from Sonoma, and half a dozen Aussies as well.

Wein & Mehr, at Amalienstraße 28, a block from the university (U3, U6), has a nice sit-down section for lunch. They also carry a few California wines among all the Europeans. They have a website but the online catalog is not current: Wein & Mehr.

The biggest selection by far is Margot Schmidt, Löherweg 38 in Untermenzing. Not very convenient with public transport so I haven't been there. See Californiawines Margot Schmitt or the PDF price list. This is also the only source I found that carries California sparking wine (Schramsberg winery, which is famous for the bubbly). Her bottles are in all price classes.
